metal detecting?/ abandoned places

Just because no one lives on the farmstead does not mean you can go take things (even if underground). You would have to find the owners and get permission first. I would definitely suggest in writing also to CYA.

  There is a detecting club in ND that is sponsoring a hunt on the weekend of 21-22 May.  It is going to be at Dead Colt Creek campground south of Lisbon.  The name of the club is Minkota Artifact Recovery Group, (M.A.R.G.) 
    Minnkota Artifact Recovery Group meets the third
Friday of the month. Meetings are held at 7:00 pm.
at the Bronco Bar and Café in Chaffee, ND.
Meetings are open to the public and guests are
welcome. Membership to the club is $20/person,
$25/family. Refreshments are available at all meetings.

Not the way I read it. Sorry about that. But with so many people think farmsteads without an occupant are fair game for looting and shooting, I figured I better clarify.

(even if you don't find any thing with the detecter, you still got lucky)

Taking anything other than wildlife (public domain) on unposted lands would most likely be considered illegal/theft. Kind of like "finding" that old car part you were looking for in an unposted field.

Theft from unoccupied farm houses is all too common. It is somewhat surprising and sad that people fail to recognize someone actually owns the property, just because no one lives there anymore does not make it fair game.

And yes, parking with someones girlfriend and drinking beer would be acceptable. Just don't leave any trash, take anything you didn't bring or she didn't offer, and have a sober driver (most likely you if she is there with you  ) it should all be good.

just go to a public park, lots along the river and hey its public. who knows what you'd find. people lose stuff all the time and you never know what the red washes up when it floods. just an option

Is there a good metal detector you could recommend for a beginner?  I've never gotten into this but it's been an interest and would like to pick one up this winter/spring.

the best one for the money you can get would be a bounty hunter quick draw II (my first) or the garrett ace 250... those are nice and basic, ive found quite a few nice items with my bounty hunter, i recently up graded to a garrett gti 1500
