Mercury water pump ?

I had to take off my lower unit in order to have my mounting bracket welded up.  Got everything put back together, and now it doesn't circulate water.  So, I have a couple elementary questions:

The water impellar is located in the lower unit, correct?  Looks to me like it must pass water up to the engine through a brass tube.

It wouldn't stab right away, so I rolled the engine over until it went in.  Did I somehow screw up allignment on the impellar.

Basically want to know where to start.  I'm going to get some fittings so I can backflush from the top, as there was some obstructions in there to begin with...looked like a wasp decided to lay some eggs in there or something.  Any tips would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I would replace it, since you had it apart. if you put them in upside down, they will not pump.  I think a new pump can be had for under $15 depending on the motor.

If it flies it dies!

Make sure to have the brass pipe pushed in the the block properly as this is the most common issue when removing a lower unit... I would also recomment replacing the pump if its appart as well....

How do you know if the brass pipe is set correctly?  Does it have to set into a seat in the engine block?  All I could see is the guide hole about halfway up to the engine.

Also, I haven't taken the pump apart.....still not 100% sure where it is exactly.  My guess is directly below that brass pipe.  So I'd say it would be impossible for me to put it in backwards...

you can put the impeller in back words then its not sucking water its pushing flip it around so the tips of the impeller go the other way if that dont work thermostat did all that work on mine and it was thermostat both parts under 15 dollars apiece

In case anyone else does this for their first time, the rass tube should be removed from lower unit, inserted into seal in engine, then install lower unit.  water pump was OK.
