Menards coming to Williston.

On the news it said it will bring 160 new jobs to the area which is great but my question is where do they plan on getting 160 people out here to work there? If they already have these people lined up where are they going to put them?

'Bout time!  I've been hoping for this for YEARS!  I go to Williston FAR more than Minot.  They may have some trouble getting employees, but probably not as much trouble as one may think.  You're right though.  If people come from elsewhere for employment, housing is an issue. 

I would venture to guess that if they are competitive in wages, that Wal-Mart will lose some employees to them.  If that happens, then it's a bummer, because it will mean longer lines at Wal-Mart and they're already long enough!!!  Other businesses will probably lose employees to them too.

Should be good!

Wow good news now to just get a fleet farm,  a perkins,  ground round, burger king, red lobster, scheels,  and williston won't be to bad to go to.

He!! any box store would come to Williston if the City gives them a $5.7million tax break!!  Repeat of the last "bust" is coming!

I have no problem with the 5.7million dollar tax break.  It's one business that will still thrive even after the oil goes.  When times get tough people really turn into do-it-yourselfers.  Menards will fit in nicely here, and they won't have as big a problem hiring people as you think.  The pay will fall between the local business's and the oil patch.  There is truly a need for something in the middle.  Not everyone wants to work in the patch, and the other jobs won't cut the mustard when it comes to paying the rent here.  One thing it will do is keep the prices of goods in line here.  Did they give the location?  I just heard west of town.

the company im working for has built 5 apt.(36 units/each) building the 6th now and there digging 3 more this year. plus all the other framing companies out there building hotels, houses. yeah i know still not enough but a start. the building were doing right now was bought (not rented) by an oil company. crazy what rent costs out there, your right about that.

It is bad news for the Minot Menards.  Minot Menards I believe is one of the nations best profit maker.  It didn't surprise me to hear that with how Menards here in Minot sent supplies all the way to about Missoula.  They have a MONSTER area to sell to and would truck products to beat heck.  A Menards in Williston will be a big pressure reliever on the Minot Menards.  So maybe it is good news.  It can be a zoo in Minot Menards...an absolute ZOO!

Will be interesting actually.  The oil boom has raised wages in Minot for many folks.  Perhaps not so much the retail as other careers or positions but one good thing for me was an increase in pay just so people wouldn't leave to the patch.

Might not be enough though....some opportunities are looming.

Tim, sounds like you are in the exact same boat as I am. 

Being a former Menards employee, you can actually make decent money there and they have a yearly profit sharing which can be quite a chunk of change for full time employees.  I worked full-time, but was part time due to college, so my sharing was cut down quite a bit.  I personally cannot wait to have a Menards here in Williston.  It is a complete nightmare having to go to the lumberyard in Minot's store.

That would be awesome if something like that actually come to fruition.  I'm curious why they are going with seperate buildings for all the business's instead of a Mall type thing?  Maybe because the retailers want more sq. footage than a mall would provide.

Don't get me wrong...I think it is great that Menards is coming here.  The problem I have is the huge tax break.  Everyone is whining that there is no place to shop,eat, sleep, etc.  The bar has now been set.  Any other business considering to set up shop in Williston is going to want the "same break".  Mean while, there is a vote coming up in Williston regarding sales tax.  Yes apples to oranges.  But we, the tax payers and long time residents of Williston, are going to be taking it in the A$$ when the boom goes bust.  Meanwhile Menards and all the other developers get their tax break,  I sure the hell am not getting one.  Just got notice from the County yesterday, you guessed it, property taxes going up.

Now I'm not complaining that we have a very stabile economy here, but what about the long term?  Who will be here to pay off the City's "breaks".  Been there, done that.  Just think about all the tax revenue lost to Montana sales.  All you have to do is drive through Walmart parking lot every single day.  Mean while our roads and streets are crap and my property taxes keep going up!!!!

I live in Williston and like most people I'm frustrated by the lack of shopping and dining options. But in my opinion a store like Menards will be an anchor for the new retail development and I really think your going to see a number of other businesses follow suit fairly quickly as that development gets going.

I don't have a huge issue with the tax breaks for a business like Menards.  Like I said just having them here will draw other businesses and people to town.
 
It all goes together.  The city, industry, and developers still have to continue to address the housing situation.  As the pressure on housing starts to ease I really think your going to start seeing more families moving to the area, especially if they see some of these things as improving the quality of life here.  It will probably also bring more people that may enter the workforce in a non-oilfield situation to town. 

Obviously a bust could happen, but I think this oil play is a lot bigger than most people realize and I personally feel it's going to last for awhile.  Even when the drilling stops, and it will some day, the industry will still require a significant number of people on the production side.

i think a furnished single bedroom is 1050/month. not sure what the 2 and 3 bedrooms go for. and if i remember correctly thats everything(heat, water, cable, ect) but yeah crazy high and i got no clue what a menards employee makes so i cant tell you if its out of there price range. i know my company will be there for awhile and as long as i got a job i can have my fun

The city isn't spending money to bring them here.  They are giving them an incentive to come here and employ 130 people by giving them a tax break.  Basically letting them keep their money and using it to employ people.  Not a bad trade off.   I have not heard of a 5.7 million tax break so I'd like to read about it.  I'm guessing there is alot more to it than meets the eye.  All cities do this kind of thing.  It's a great way to entice business's.  Having strictly oilfield type business's in town is a sure way to suffer great pain when it shrinks.  Your thinking is the same line of thinking Minot had regarding the air base for many many years.  Then they got some new blood in there and the new guys said "you know what, the damn base is going to close someday".  "We need to position ourselves as a community so that when that day comes we will be fine".  And now there wouldn't be that much of a decline if the base closed.  Minot is in a hell of alot better position than they were a half dozen years ago.  Williston may be learning from that and understands that you need to diversify.  Menards is a fairly recession proof business.

It may sound like a crazy number but I know there is more to it then that... When Wal mart came to my small town back home they had to pay a huge chunk of money each year to improve roads and such...

i do agree that the montanans should have to pay our sales tax when they come to williston and shop.  What a crock that they dont have too.  They are in ND arent they,  if they don't like it i guess they can drive to billings to their closest walmart then to save some tax,  but if its bought in ND it should have ND tax paid on it.

to be honest, North Dakotan's shouldn't be paying sales tax considering the enormous surplus, and constant flow of oil money now.

I keep hearing rumors about a bunch of stores, truck stops, restaurants, hotels, gated communities coming into Dickinson and building new schools etc....!    I even hear the Target is coming to Dickinson.  I would rather see a Cabela's or Gander Mountain.   

Developers are coming in and wanting to do all this when the current infrastructure is not close to being in place.  The local politicians need to help control the influx and not get too GREEDY, because we could be stuck with a lot of empty buildings if the price happens to go down and things go bust.  It happened once, it can happen again...!

If things turn out and we have sustained growth in communities in western North Dakota....GREAT, but at least be somewhat cautious.

YIPPEE SKIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What the heck has Menards ever did for Williston?  It was and is the present businesses and residents that pulled this town out of the muck from the last oil boom.  Surely not Menards.  I am tired of having to pay for the last 20 years for the sins of the last oil boom/'bust.  The tax breaks should be going to the residents and business that paid for the last 20-25 years.  If Meanards ( yes the spelling was intended) feel they can make money in Williston, they will come without the 5.7 million.  Hell, that would cut the residents real estate taxes quite a chunck

your exactly right. and the bonus's are excellent.  I'm good friends with the dept. manager of the millwork dept. at a menards and his annual bonus is over 30k.

I dont usually post on forms but i need to set the record strait about Menards i have worked for Menards for 10+ years.  For the most part they are a good company to work for. Part time start out in the middle $8 and full time in the middle $10 range and profit shareing is nice after you work there for 5 years it is based on years of service and there is no dept manage making 30k bonus maybe store manager.  The only way to make real money there is to work overtime they usually will let you work as many hours as you want.  Menards is not a company that overpays and i cant see them paying any more in Williston than any other of there stores.  The Minot store has been understaffed for years because they cant find qulified help and they have not raised the wages in that sore.

I was hired at the Minot Menards back in 95' when it opened.  Back then my starting wage was going to be $10.75.  I ended up going another route.  My cousin has worked for menards for probably a dozen years in Fargo.  He makes decent money.

I can tell you menards pay is not that good unless your a manager. My wife has worked there for 3 years and has been 3 promotions and only makes 9.10 per hour. On weekends you get paid more like 2.50 per hour extra. They treat there employees like crap. If they pay good in williston I will be suprised. And yes the minot menards is the best selling menards in the nation for 4 years straight
