So lets say you get a gut shot on a buck and recover the body. Is the meat still good? How do you know?

As long as you recover it right a way, it should be good.

Make sure the meat is cooled as soon as possible and rinse thoroughly and it should be just fine.

Like was said, if you can get it cleaned and cooling almost immediately, there shouldn't be any problem.

Its all based on how you "gut" the gut shot deer.  Remember membrane 101 and you will be all right.

Just keep the guts out of the meat, just like always. Anything untouched by stomach/intestinal matter will be no different than a deer thats not gut shot.

Why ever "gut" a deer or other big game animal?   Much easier imho to quarter it out,  take the back straps, tenderloins and neck meat and be done with it.

IMHO, I would leave the tenderloins if it was gut shot. They seem to get more of the stomach/intestine contents embedded in them than any other cut.

You can make cut through where you removed the loins and remove them. But with a gut shot deer and that "crap" usually sloshing around in there, I would not risk it.

Indeed, do not gut a gut shot deer.  Actually, there is no good reason to ever gut a deer in my opinion.  You can fit all the meat of a deer, even bone-in, in one good backpack load.  I did it last night, bone-in probably weighed 80 lbs.  Tenderloins are in the same place as always, just start at the last rib, and make a small incision along the backbones to the pelvis.  Don't go too deep, as the paunch is right there.  Grab ahold of it, and a little bit of carefull knife work, you'll have it out without getting your hands stinky, or hardly bloody for that matter.

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

to add to the whole gutless method... if you haven't got a good pack, a rope comes in handy.  tie one front and one hind quarter to each end of the rope and then toss them over your shoulders/neck.  the tenderloins and backstraps get stuffed in my oversized pockets of my hunting coat.  once you've got it down, you will wonder why you ever gutted a deer.  i'd say the only con is that sometimes you might be faced w/ leaving a carcass on land where a landowner might not approve.  or if you happen to drop it in the road ditch...  it probably isn't wise to leave the carcass w/ your tag on the head just lying out in plain view for everyone to see.
