There are finally some nice bluegill and bass to catch at McDowell. The lake is real nice right now. Can see a lot of fish swimming around. Catch the fish with small worms and bobber or fly rod. I just fished around the docks and swimming area. No doubt would do well if I had used a boat to get to some other spots. I caught several real nice bluegill and a number of smaller ones. Saw a few nice bass being caught. All that I caught weren't too big.

Myself, my buddy, my fiance and our little girl were the ones next to you on the dock later on that evening flycaster. We ended up catching 7 bluegill on hook and corn from the dock and several bites. The fishing got worse the closer to dusk it got. Was a fun time for the little one and a good way to spend a weekday evening.

McDowell Dam - Tuesday, July 21, 2009 | |
I fished McDowell on Tuesday, July 21 with the family. We fished from the dock near the boat rental. Lots of bluegill biting but most were too small to keep. I saw quite a few bluegill sitting on nests near shore that looked to be good size. Had I gone there by myself with a floattube, no doubt a person could catch a number of good sized bluegill. We used earthworms dug from the garden. Those that were fishing with nightcrawler caught just about nothing, even though they were cutting them in quarters. Kids had a lot of fun.
As I can say by experience, anybody with kids that can't swim, please have them wear lifejackets when near water. Last night, my two year old fell off the dock into about 8 feet of water. He was pushing his stroller and apparently followed it right over the edge. Luckily he had a life jacket on and no damage was done except wet clothes. I can't imagine what may have happened if he weren't wearing a life jacket. He was only about 25 feet away from me but in the time that I got over there he would have sunk to the bottom without a life jacket. |
