The gates that are being talked about are west of McClusky 3 miles, then south of highway on the canal. You may not be able to drive down to the canal after this last snowstorm. No walleyes are biting on South Hoffer lake. Access will also be tough now on New Johns lake, you may be able to get in on the south side. There is a change on big northerns and fair eyes biting on New Johns, I had fair luck earlier, but its been awile.

The report on the canal was might have been true. After reading the report we went to the area south of highway 200 by gates yesterday and fished for 4 hours in the afternoon with minnows, glups, wax worms. We had vexalars and they showed fish all the time. The fish followed the lures and sat right on them. Some fish looked fair sized too, but we only catch 1 small perch and had a few other bites. It may have been the change ot weather.. Going to be hard to get to bottom of canal, after snow to try again.

bud, this is just a hunch on my part but i would guess that was a hoax of a report. I haven't talked to anyone who is catching much more than a northern or a couple perch anywhere on the canal system including the lakes. If i'm wrong I appoligize but if you go try it I wouldn't hold my breath.

Fished the canal about a 1/4 mile south of the gates on the south side of the highway on 1/16/10. caught 70-80 bluegill and 50 perch. kept 10 perch and 25 bluegill. at least ten of the bluegill were just shy of a pound, 3 were over a pound no walleye or northern. if you wanna catch anything you better have a vexilar cause they were biting really soft
