Man missing in Jamestown

Reports state a 50 year old man was out icefishing yesterday and never returned home last night. His truck was still partked at the lake this morning. They called out the search and rescue divers this morning but that's all the details available at this time.

My buddies and I were just talking about this yesterday while debating whether or not to go. As of Friday, the warm water had opened up the ice about 6-8 feet around the majority of the lake. We found 1 good spot that was solid and drilled holes and found 5.5" of good clean ice. However, now with the colder temps, people would simply assume it's all the same having not checked ahead and there would be barely a skim of ice on the majority of the lake to get out to good ice.

Please investigate where you're going before walking out, be careful and take it serious this time of year especially.

That just sent chills down my spine. Hope they find him. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family and friends

Incredibly sad. I dont get how you ice fisherman will venture out on anything less than 6'' of ice. Nothing is worth more than your life, not even "early ice" fishing.

You have 5 months to ice fish. Trust me, the ice will form. Why risk it?

Very unfortunate. I really hope that he is just holed up somewhere cold and scared but alive. Thoughts and prayers.

That doesn't sound good.  I hope for the best.  Early ice adventures are best done with a buddy and ice picks or a secure safety rope.

This was my first trip last year.  The ice was around 4".  I tied a rope to the ball of my pickup and then to my waist.  I have never had to test this setup, and hope I never will.

Ha ha.  It would have to fall through land.  I hope that doesn't happen because then we would all be in trouble.

This is exactly what i'm talking about. Not attacking, I'm just saying. Is it really worth it when you have to do this? Is fishing really this good to actually have to do this? I dont think a fish or 50 is worth this imho.

Totally up to you.  All I am saying is if you want to play on early ice at least be prepared.  People do things that have risk every day.  Some more than others.  That is life.

Damnit!  This kind of news just never gets any easier to hear.

IMHO, no ice is safe.  Always have a plan in place to get yourself out of the water if you fall through.  Ice picks, Captain's rope, float jacket, all are good ideas.

Just a bad idea to go out alone on the early ice, whether you have a rope tethered to your pickup or you are wearing inflatable arm floaties...bring a buddy and a chipping bar.

That's one thing I don't have the stones to do is ice fish rivers.  I also know which lakes freeze faster than others due to springs or lack there of.  The question begs to be asked.....What's the scariest thing that has ever happened to you Buckmaster?  A dream of a giant bullhead grabbing you with its whiskers?

I have fallen thru ice in water too deep to touch bottom on two separate occasions. Consider myself very lucky. Scary indeed. And there truly is no such thing as safe ice.

Of course we take risks everyday, but most of them are unavoidable, (getting in your car to go to work, traveling by plane, crossing the street in traffic. etc.)
Stuff like you posted, however, is avoidable

I agree with jk..

I used to to dumb stuff like this when I was in HS and college but then I grew(smartened) up and I most certainly wouldn't do this now that I have a wife and kids at home.

1) I was attacked by a 125 lb rottwieller when I was 8. I was absolutely sure I was gonna die, but after 8 days in the hospital, 3 surgeries and 25k in medical bills that insurance didn't cover (dad loved that) I survived.

Ouch.  Sorry I asked.  I got mauled pretty good by German Shepherd when I was about 3.  Good thing dad was right there or I might not be here either.
