Malted Barley for Brewing

Hi guys, I have searched high and low and I have not been able to find an outlet in this state for malted barley and other roasted grains for brewing beer.  I live in ND,  the largest barley producing state in the Nation and it just doesn't feel right for me to have to order 50# bags of malted barley from midwest supplies in the twin cities.

Does anybody here know where a guy can get some malted barley around here?

I wouldn't feel too bad about it because that barley was probably grown in ND anyway.

I thought Happy Harry's liquor in Grand Forks carried beer making supplies a number of years ago.  Well, at least some of my grad school buddies bought much of their stuff from them.

I personally know a lot less about making beer than I do drinking it, but 50# bags of barley seems like a lot of barley for the scale at which my friends made beer.

permo,

You gotta PM my buddy bluegills24/7.  He's a beer making master.  Or something like that!

Seriously though, might be worth sending him a PM.

Permos house is OK..  The grilling skills leave a bit to be desired, it smells like feet and protein shake...  But his wife is purdy and his daughter is cute as heck!!  Too bad he has to be there.

YES, I am that foolish!

Just great!  Now I will probably need another new keyboard, since this one is now filled with coffee and whatever else was in my nose.

There used to be a place in Minot called Backyard Brewing supplies.  I havent stopped by there in a few years.
I take it you like going the all grain route?  I tried it a few times.  Turned out to be twice the work!!!  Maybe the smell of the grain reminds me too much of cleaning out bins.
I switched to the DME and liquid. Don't have to seep anything, just pour, boil, toss in the hops.  Reminds me, I have a few cases that i made up last winter I may have to dust off!!!!
I have a fever...and the only prescription...is more walleyes!!

Speaking of beer making supplies.  Do hops grow wild in ND?  There is a place I fish once in a while that I something that I could have sworn were hops.

I was saving it to break-in the ice house.  I think I will just whip up a few new batches for that.   I'll go threw and sample it to make sure it's still good!!!  Maybe save a few 6ers for your birthday.  I have dani's cider bubbling away as I speak.  Man I love the fall season LOL.

Ha ha.  I forgot about the cider.

Yeah, let me know.  I can cost share some of the brew so I don't just get headaches...I also help with the cash flow.

I wish I only needed raw "malting barley"  I needed malting barley that has went through the "malting process" I would do it myself but it takes forever!  I need about 10 pounds of American 2 row malted barley base malt to make a normal 5 gallon batch of my American Pale Ale.

Hops I don't think grow wild in ND, but you can sure grow them on your fence and in your yard...they grow on vines.

My grillng skills are OUTSTANDING...and yes my house is fun....so what if it smells like protein shakes....that's the smell of brute strength!

Tim, I will PM your brewmaster buddy for sure.

That all being said, brewing your own beer is a fantastic  and amazingly addicting hobby.  I recently converted to an "all grain" brewing setup, hence the need for barley.

I'll second Permo.  It can become addicting.
I went from mainly using bottles to the 5 gallon soda kegs.  That made "bottling" nite go a lot smoother.   Not to mention I also found a way to spend more money on my "hobby".
I still laugh when I bring up tim's "trail of terror".  Never knew anyone that has gotten lost in there own bedroom before hehehehe

Man, cider sounds like a great idea.  I have an IPA fermenting right now..I may just throw 5 gallons of apple cider, a pound or two of corn sugar and a few cinnamon sticks on the yeast cake to see what happens ;-)

Anyways, I have a holiday brew with apples, apple cider, honey, a few kinds of malt, 3 different kinds of hops, honey and some spice fermenting now as well. It was at 7.5% ABV a few weeks ago. I am going to let it sit in secondary fermentation to mellow until thanksgiving and then bottle it up and let it condition until xmas....xmas is going to be fun this year.

Can I come over for xmas? That sounds delicious, though our family definitely does not need 7.5%. Xmas is already a $#!t show in our house.
