LOW suggestions/help

Heading to LOW in another week for an over night trip and I have never been there.  My neighbor's dad is setting up the trip and we are taking our boys.  I don't even know where we are going out of, but can find out.  Anyway, I am just wondering what I should be stocking up on before the trip?  What's the "go to" lures and techniques, etc...

Really looking forward to getting away with the son for a little ice adventure and bonding.  I don't know what to expect from the fishing side of things, but I do know we will have a good time regardless.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I grew up running around that lake, just stick to the basics, a beer can off the bottom with golds, glow reds, pinks.

find deeper water , prolly anywhere from 28 to 32ft . Walleyes bite all day on the Great LOW, it can be an absolute blast, if ya got a flasher bring it, camera's don't work so leave it home.

just make sure ya got a jigger and a dead stick and pretty much everywhere ya go you will find some fish, check with resorts and read local fishing reports,

Check this website too, www.lakestatefishing.com
go to outdoor forums and click lake of the woods must be 20 reports comign from LOW everyday.

bring plenty of beer for celebrating! good luck

Definitely need a flasher, many big walleyes are suspended up to 15 ft off the bottom.  Also DO fish at night with a dead stick, rattle reel, or tip up in the house.  There have been many nice fish caught late after dark which has been unusual for that lake.  We caught one at 9pm last week and last year I got one at 5am.

Leaving today for the NW Angle.  Hope the change in the weather front doesn't hurt the bite.

Top 3 jig color choices.

1.  Gold

2.  Gold

3.  Gold on gold

Dead stick is obviously just that.  With your jigging rod, let your jig pound the bottom good and hard 2x-5x then pick your jig up off the bottom 6"-18" and hold it still.  Repeat until you either catch fish jigging or dead-sticking and nail down a pattern.

What he said! Gold will be the key. We have also had good luck jigging with chubby darters #3 or 5 I believe.

Between these two that is exactly what I do.  One dead stick and another jigging.  Have had pretty good luck with the darter as well.  If they don't bite it they will hit the dead stick.  Most of the folks in the resorts are friendly as well.  Gold has always been my color as well.

Was there last weekend.  Best lures were the glow red chubby darter (smallest size) and orange/glow buckshot rattle spoon.  For deadstick, the red or glow nucleus jigs worked the best.  It was cloudy all last weekend, so gold didn't do well.  If it's sunny, use gold.  If it's not, use pink/glow for jigs.  That's always been my system.  I've done well on chartreuse jigs the past 2 years as well.  Good luck.  It's a great lake.

Agree with everything above for the most part. For me, glow pink/red rattling flyers and buckshots are my go to lures in the winter. Gold is good, but personally have much better luck w/ it in the summer. go to

Are you staying in a sleeper house, pulling up your own house, or staying at a resort?

What are you guys tipping these jigs with?  Full minnows, minnow heads, etc...  and how about the dead sticks, full minnow on a single snell or jig?  My top walleye lure here in ND has always been a nils master with a minnow head on the treble.  I haven't had a whole lot of experience ice fishing for walleyes as I am usually targeting perch when I have gone.
I did use the opportunity to pick up a new flasher, ICE 55.  In fact, I just picked it up last night and Scheels matched an online price from Poorfish Outdoors.  I have used a Zercom for the last 11 years and have been wanting to update for a while so my son has a unit as well.  Just needed a good enough excuse to spend the money.  Does anyone on here have any experience with these Hummingbirds?  I assembled it last night and was wondering if in fact I needed to utilize the "support" cable along with the "signal" cable.  Seemed like you should be able to put the float right on the signal cable and drop the transducer in the hole.  So many colors I won't know what to do, but if there are suspended fish it will be nice to utilize the zoom function.
I'm getting pumped, hope the weather cooperates.  I will have to print these responses out because I don't have a clue on what most of these lures are you guys are talking about.

We are renting a sleeper house for Saturday night and my buddy's dad is bringing a clam.  I haven't completely gone through the MN regs yet, but if I were to bring my frabil it looked like I would have to pay to fish out of it.  Is that correct.  It looked like I needed to hire a lawyer to decipher the MN regulations for me.

Dead sticks use a full chub or shiner and keep it about 6" off the bottom.

I use a minnow head on anything I jig, including chubby darters.  Put just the head on the front treble hook on the chubby and a little less than half of the minnow on the buckshot.  I mostly use chubby darters and buckshots for jigging.  Some people have luck on the rattling flyers, but I've never had much luck with them.  I've also had some luck with jigging rapalas and swedish pimples.

You can bring your portable to fish out of during the day.  It sounds like mid day you want to be in 30 ft of water if you can get that deep.   I have always had my best luck for quality fish on LOW with a #5 gold and orange chubby darter or a glow pink and gold buckshot.

You may want to bring a portable dvd player, deck of cards, and board games.  There isn't much of a night bite on LOW!

As long as the portable is attended no licence is needed.

Ha!  I know a good lawyer if you need one.  You don't need a separate license to use your portable, you just need to have your name, DL number, or DNR number on there somewhere.  The fish house license is only required if you plan on leaving the house unattended at night.

Well at least that makes a little sense.  I can throw it in the back of my pickup for the night.

Also, what size fish does a guy usually catch up there?  Is it numbers of cigars or are there plenty of decent size fish too?

It depends on the day and location.  Last weekend, the first day and a half I hardly caught a small fish.  Next day and a half, we threw back 2-3 for every one we kept.  There are some really nice saugers being caught this year.  You'll get a lot of 10-13" saugers as well.  Usually, you get about 50% keepers; maybe a little less.  Have to be careful in 30 fow.  If you hook a small one, take your time bringing him up or they won't go back down.
