AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BISMARCK ND
507 AM CDT WED OCT 28 2009

.SHORT TERM...TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT...
A MAJOR WINTER STORM CONTINUES TO TAKE SHAPE FOR MOST OF CENTRAL
NORTH DAKOTA LATE TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT. CONTINUED TO
FOLLOW THE CONSISTENT NAM AND ECMWF FOR MOST OF THE GRID DETAILS AS
WELL AS PREVIOUS CONTINUITY. HAVE EXPANDED THE WINTER STORM WATCH
WHICH NOW INCLUDES PORTIONS OF THE SOUTHWEST AND NORTH CENTRAL AS
WELL THE SOUTHEAST ZONES. THE SOUTH CENTRAL ZONES STILL LOOK TO
RECEIVE THE BRUNT OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW...AS THE LATEST GUIDANCE
SUGGESTS A SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST ORIENTATED HEAVY SNOW BAND
CENTERED BETWEEN BISMARCK AND JAMESTOWN AND FROM SHIELDS TO WISHEK.
BETWEEN THESE AREAS A TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATION THURSDAY INTO
THURSDAY NIGHT OF 8 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE. WILL LET THE
DAY SHIFT HAVE ANOTHER LOOK AND ADJUST THE AREA IF NEED BE. ALSO
HAVE ADDED AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW AS THE NAM AND ECMWF KEEP BOUNDARY
LAYER AND SURFACE WINDS BETWEEN 25KT AND 35KT. WILL NEED TO WATCH
THESE WINDS CLOSELY AS VISIBILITIES MAY DROP AT OR BELOW ONE QUARTER
OF A MILE IN HEAVY SNOW...THUS COULD HAVE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS
ESPECIALLY LATE THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING. BUFR
SOUNDINGS AND NAM BUFKIT ANALYSIS CONTINUE TO SHOW A CLASSIC HEAVY
SNOW SIGNATURE WITH A BULLS-EYE OMEGA FIELD WITHIN THE -10C AND -20C
DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONE BETWEEN 21Z THU AND 03Z FRI. IF FUTURE MODEL
RUNS CONTINUE TO SHOW THIS TREND THEN THIS WILL BE OUR TIME TO
RECEIVE THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL. HPC WINTER WEATHER DESK AGREES WITH
THIS SCENARIO. THE SNOW TAPERS OFF LATE THURSDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY
FRIDAY MORNING WITH LEFTOVER FLURRIES OR SNOW SHOWERS. LOWERED
TEMPERATURES...BOTH HIGHS AND LOWS...IN ANTICIPATION OF SEVERAL
INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND FRIDAY INTO FRIDAY NIGHT.

Hee, hee.  It's that time of the year again!  Our secretary at work just hates me because I love these weather events.

Can you say replay of last year?  Big storm right before deer season.

Still, the line of nasty weather looks to remain fairly south.  All it takes is one little frontal shift and wham!!!

The thing is though, I can't love these events too much yet.  Lots of folks have way too much moisture and crops need to come down.  I don't wish this type of system on anyone.  Plus, I'd like to go to the badlands this weekend and if it snows too much and temps don't get pretty cold it will be a sloppy mess.

I hope it doesn't get to sloppy as I plan to be out in MT this weekend chasing some mulies around.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

It does look like the worst will be a little to the east and south of Bismarck. But the forecast looks like wet on and off the next 2 weeks. Mud sucks for any type of hunting. At least snow doesn't stick to your boots.

Yeah I hate slop.  I want freezing temps and about 2-6 inches of non-wet snow.  Perfect.

If hunting gumbo country I think a tracked vehicle is adviseable.

Precipitation-wise it hasnt been as bad as expected here on the eastern half of MT anyway, it's actually drying out finally.

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

I know I'll wake up to more opportunity than nearly anywhere else, and that's enough for me.

As long as there is something to chase around, it doesn't matter what the weather is like.  Mind over matter!

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BISMARCK ND
335 PM CDT WED OCT 28 2009

.SYNOPSIS...WINTER STORM SYSTEM NOW SHIFTING MORE TO THE EAST AND
TEMPERATURES ARE A BIT WARMER...WINDS NOT AS STRONG AS EXPECTED.
HAVE UPGRADED THE WATCH TO A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW
ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT.
KEPT THE WINTER STORM WATCH GOING ACROSS THE EAST CENTRAL BUT
DELAYED THE BEGINNING OF THE WATCH PERIOD UNTIL THURSDAY AROUND
SUNRISE.

&&

.SHORT TERM...TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT
FORECAST PROBLEMS TODAY CONCENTRATED ON THE PATH OF
THE STORM AS WELL AS THE TEMPERATURE PROFILES. MODELS GENERALLY
AGREE ON SHIFTING THE MAIN PRECIPITATION PATTERN FURTHER EAST THAN
YESTERDAY. HAVE FOCUSED ON THE TRACK OF THE 700 MB LOW TO
DELINEATE THE HEAVY SNOW POTENTIAL. GFS/NAM AND ECMWF TRACK THE 700
MB LOW FROM WESTERN NEBRASKA AT 12Z THUR TO THE RED RIVER VALLEY
BY 12Z FRIDAY. THIS TRACK WOULD SUPPORT A POTENTIAL HEAVY SNOW BAND
FROM SOUTH CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA NORTHEAST LEAVING THE SOUTHWEST
OUT OF THE HEAVY SNOW POTENTIAL. ALSO...THE LOW LEVEL TEMPERATURES
WILL SUPPORT MORE RAIN TONIGHT AND THURSDAY ACROSS THE EAST
CENTRAL...TURNING TO SNOW THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING. THIS
HAS LEAD US TO DELAY THE WINTER STORM WATCH UNTIL THURSDAY ACROSS
THE EAST CENTRAL AND UPGRADE THE WATCH TO A WINTER WEATHER
ADVISORY FOR SNOW ACROSS THE WEST. SNOW AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES
ARE POSSIBLE SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL...WITH 6 TO 8 INCHES OF
SNOW POSSIBLE IN THE WINTER STORM WATCH AREA. THE WARMER
TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE EAST HAS DECREASED TO SNOW POTENTIAL FROM
EARLIER ESTIMATES OF UP TO 12 INCHES TO A MAX OF 8 INCHES NOW.
FURTHER REFINEMENT CAN BE EXPECTED LATER TONIGHT AND THURSDAYS.

.LONG TERM...SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY
THE MODELS ARE IN AGREEMENT IN MOVING AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OVER THE
ROCKIES ON SUNDAY. EXCEPT FOR A WEAK SHORT WAVE MOVING DOWN THE
RIDGE ON SUNDAY...IT APPEARS THAT THE RIDGE WILL SHUNT ANY POTENTIAL
WEATHER NORTH OF THE FORECAST AREA. TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE PERIOD
SHOULD BE AT OR A LITTLE ABOVE NORMAL.

.AVIATION...TWO SURFACE LOWS...ON IN SOUTHERN MANITOBA...AND A
STRONGER LOW IN KANSAS...WILL BRING IFR WEATHER IN THE FORM OF LOW
CLOUDS AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES IN RAIN AND SNOW TO THE REGION
TONIGHT AND THURSDAY.

The NWS just updated the 6-10 and 8-14 day outlook. Warmer weather on the way! We deserve a warmer November. One of my friends was fishing yesterday south of Bismarck and they caught a limit of really nice fish. Bring on the warmer weather!
