I see posting on using of Leadcore line and am unfamilar with the process. Is this a type of line you purchase? What brand? How fair back do you let your line out (I have a line counter). Any other tricks? Thanks!

You can purchase lead core at Scheels for sure. It is a heavy line (has a lead core) used to get your cranks to deeper depths without letting so much line out. It is colored with different colors to let you know how much line you have out. You back it with trilene or fireline.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

I think leadcore is fairly useless for the river but can come in handy when fishing deeper bodies of water. I have never bothered with it though.

I never bothered with it until last summer. I bought some and put it on an old open face trolling reel with an old rod (only invested in the line). Needless to say the 1st time i outfished my buddy. Caught a Salmon, and about 4 walleyes. This year i want to get something more set up for pulling leadcore. Like the other post said end it with a leader of mono. It will be the only way i pull cranks deep this year.

Are you saying you end the lead core with mono? How much mono do you add to the end? How do you tie it? Thanks fellas.

Go to Animated Knots by Grog on the web it will show you how to tie knots step by step. I put on any where between 30 to 50 ft of 10lb mono leader on the leadcore.

I have had leadcore in and out of my hands many times and I have the trollers bible that tells you what wt of line to use and how many feet of line to let out using a reel with counter on it for a specific crank so what is best to use? This method or leadcore line? I don't know... curious what you have to say.......... good luck

I usually end the lead core with a leader of mono about 4 or 5 foot. First spool the reel with the lead core. Next tie a swivel onto the end of the lead core. Just peel back the coating, cut about a 3in chunk of lead out and tie the coating to the swivel. Then tie the mono to the other end of the swivel. I am still playing with lead core myself but so far i am impressed. For each crank i use i let out enough line until i hit the bottom, then count the number of colors that were let out. This gives me an idea of how deep the lure runs using the lead core with so many colors let out. Sounds confusing but it really is pretty simple to use. Just have to experiment.

Great intro to lead core. It is a lot easier to use than people think. It gets you away from the crowds and if you fish long breaks you can keep your crank in the strike zone consistently at low speeds. It can be deedly this time of year if you are willing to experiment a little.

With as many people as I ahve had come so darn near my boat when I either tie up or try pitching cranks I have about had enough of that business. But that is a whole nother can of worms...

If you want to use lead core to the max get a map of the lake you are fishing and find sustainable breaks and go to work. The fish are there. Remember it is not all about fishing lead core in 30 fow... it is also about 15-20 fow at a much slower, controlled speed. It works great!! Just another tool for the lake.

Leadcore has segmented colors. Each color is typically 10 yds or 30 ft. A common rule of thumb is that for each color of lead you let out, the line will sink 5 feet. Therefore irregardless of which crank your pulling if you have a full 5 colors let out, the crank will be running in the 25 foot range.

It is a good idea to run at least a 10 ft. mono leader at the end. This acts as a shock absorber when you hook into the bigger fish. The best way to attach it is direct line to line. As already mentioned you need to peel back the dacron on the lead line and remove the lead prior to tying your knots. The best knot to attach the two lines is a back to back Uni knot.

This is an extremely effective way of reaching fish and can be very rewarding.

Good luck and good fishing.

One thing to remember is that when you go slower or stop, your plugs go deeper. I used leadcore last year for the first time. I usually don't fish it becuase the guys I fish with don't even like trolling plugs. They don't have lead and can't troll very deep. I need to get the trollers bible.
