Land Owner Maps

I am going hunting this year out in the killdeer moutain area. I believe it is unit 4A. I am new to that area and I was wondering where I could get the best landowner/contour maps available. I tried the Game & Fish but they had nothing. Im thinking I might have to go through the county somehow but im not sure. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

C Baby,

Contact any county auditors office or even the county sheriff department if you can't track down an atlas elsewhere.  There are several atlas makers in the area so If I were you'd contact the county office and ask them where they get there's.  They probably have some for sale even.  Also, ask around about dates of the books because one company may have a newer edition out.

As far as maps with landowner information, I don't know about that, but the Grasslands maps are pretty good. I picked one up for the badlands area at the McKenzie County ranger station and it covers some of the Kildeer mtn area, but not all of it. They can sell you the maps or point you in the right direction.

Those atlases are awfully expensive and after buying one for Dunn ($46.00) and one for McKenzie county ($79.00)I don't think they are worth it unless you do a LOT of hunting there. Get the grasslands map (excellent map but very outdated!) and also recommend a map called "General Highway Map" of Dunn County that I got in the Dunn County Courthouse in Manning, ND. There may be the same thing available for McKenzie county and other counties as well as I think they told me they are made primarily for ambulance and fire servicdes.
That one is prepared by the "ND Department of Transportation Planning and Programming Division in cooperation with the US Department of Transportation Fedral Highway Adminitration." Quoting the map. Should be fairly current as ground inventory says 2001. It and the grasslands map were cheap compared to the atlases. I found the atlases not that user friendly either.
There is also supposed to be a "Sportsman's Map" of McKenzie and Dunn County produced by Midland Atlas Co. of Watford City but when we dropped in to buy one I was told they don't make one for these counties yet.

The land owner maps are a serious pain in the butt. I have been trying to find out somebodies property to see if it is ok to hunt but nobody seems to know who owns it. There needs to be a web page our something.

You would think if it's worth spending a few hundred on gas you would want to know who and where you are at when you get there. Door to door is still the best way to find your way around the country, do your discovery work when the landowners tend to have slack time and they will enjoy the company and funny city ways that many hunters have. I imagine I'll catch hell for that post but who cares.... lol..

Contact that counties Clerk Office, and they should have them on hand (Plat Map)........if you plan on doing any hunting in the are in the future, I suggest making the investment and just purchase yourself a copy.....they run anywhere from $40-45.00 or something like that.....I have Plat Maps for many of the counties in the SW part of the state (but not that one, LOL) and they are a tremendously valuable resource.....

Every hunter should have these two things in their scouting arsenal....a G&F Plots Map and a county Plat Map....

Find the area you would like to hunt, and be sure to get the landowners permission....regardless if it is posted or not, it is just the right thing to do....and the courteous thing to do......
