Lake Sakakawea Fishing Reports
Indian Hills / Mahto (Red Butte) Bay Area - Thursday, July 14, 2011
We are still waiting for the big bite to start! Not sure what is changing the pattern of the walleye. Traditionally we see the walleye start here just a week or so after the bite up north but this year it just has not been very strong. The Game and Fish guys were out last week test netting and they told me there are some really nice fish out there but they are scattered, McKenzie Bay had a good concentration as well as Deep Water. The age classes we are going to see in the next few years are growing and are very healthy. If I get a report from them I will send it on. Most boats headed to Parshall this week and had good success. The ones we seen here were few but 20-24 in was not uncommon. At the bottom of the report I have posted the local Derby's going on in case you want to stay out of those areas etc. Kelly

Lake Sakakawea - Wednesday, July 13, 2011
Fished Van Hook area for 14 of last 16 days with success coming all days except the 4th. Fished for the most part in 6-14 ft of water and from Fox Island north. Fish are some of the healthiest eyes I have ever seen (fatter than tailrace). Fished all different presentations with 90% coming on cranks. Only thing I couldn't catch them on was slip bobbers. Smelt colored cranks or reflective cranks seemed to work best, used salmo 4's 5's, Jointed 5's 7's and bomber 24a's most of the time. Good luck!

Van Hook Arm - Tuesday, July 12, 2011
Fishing at Van Hook has been great for the last week. Last Saturday was the best day of fishing in years for many anglers. Walleye were in 8 to 12 FOW and being taken on most everything. My choice was the lindy and crawler. We had limits both Saturday and Sunday before noon. Monday things changed. Fish pulled out of the shallows and headed for island tops. We're finding lots of really nice walleye on and around the islands in 16 to 20 FOW, still on lindys and half a crawler. Fish are on nearly every piece of structure in that 16 to 20 foot range and possibly many other areas.

Van Hook Arm - Monday, July 11, 2011
My brother and I fished the Hook Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday: Wind forecast to get a little stiff so was on the water by 6:15 am. Started out good leaving the Arm boat ramp when my oil alarm started chirping. My brother got everything ready but forgot to grab some extra oil. Good news is they make the alarms go off well in advance so had plenty to get into Brendle's Bay. Plus, with the high water, only a short job to the bait shop! So on the water at 6:15 but fishing at about 7:15. Oh well!!!!!! Started in way back bay in grass. Nothing but perch after perch so went to east side. By this time the boats were piling in on certain areas. I have a fetish so avoided those areas and hit a small sunken point with four trees sticking out. I didn't know it was a point but after a couple passes with the boat figured it out. Got a nice walleye on the second pass and kept on working it. Was NOT fast and furious by any means but after a few passes we had I think 4 fish. Wind came up and I tried to start my big motor to backtroll and wouldn't ya know it, no motor. Day getting better! Instead of panicking I knew I was S.O.L. and with stiff wind out of west no sense even asking anyone to tow me. Kept fishing with Vantage and by gosh the fishing got better and we got our 10 fish by 10:00 a.m. Limped over to shore and broke the rules by docking on Lake Sakakawea shoreline (after getting my uncle to bring pickup and boat trailer around to the other side of the lake. Good times!!!!!!! Sunday: Got off the water too darn early on Saturday and had a few cool beverages. End result was didn't get up early enough!!! We went to the west end of the Arm and started fishing around 12:30 or maybe it was 1 pm. I forget. Anyway, the goal today was to show my brother the ins and outs of cranking. Rumor had it the crank bite was smoking hot. The other rumor was it was a very strict morning bite on Van Hook. Well, that was true! I had a goal of cranking in 8 feet but with the shoreline, etc I couldn't find good pockets of snag free water. So I had to put up with cranking on the outside edge of the trees. This edge was 16 foot of water. Got all that setup and off we started. We actually fished next to the zoo of boats and thought maybe it would work out since we cranked on the outside edge of them but very few nets flying around (none for first hour actually) and we just kept on trolling by. Finally, we marked a couple and the rods banged. Tanner got to catch his first crank fish in his newly reconditioned Yar-Craft. It was slow and we quite shortly after 3 pm with just four keepers. Nice keepers but of course all from the 2005 year class. The goal was met though with Tanner getting the ins and outs of cranking, no lost crankbaits and a couple fish for the frying pan. Maybe could have cranked up more if we took the time to do some reconnaissance work to find the appropriate water and structure. And of course, get up and get on the water when a guy should! I know many were getting fish in the Hook but like last year, I fear a decline in the bite shortly. It isn't good when it is so morning dominated. That means deeper fish that come into the shallows at night to feed are getting picked off by fishermen and/or retreating to the depths. Just a clear cut sign not enough catchable fish and too much food available. I think in about a week it will be difficult to catch fish even in the fish capital of Sakakawea. Maybe I will be wrong and I'd be happy to be wrong. Guess we'll see. Until then, enjoy about the only place consistent fish can be caught on Sakakawea. Heck, wasn't even consistent for me this weekend but I think getting on the water at 1 pm and leaving at 3 pm is not exactly smart fishing hours! Ha ha. Oh well, it was fun the night before . |

East End - Saturday, July 9, 2011
Went out yesterday on the east end. It took a while to find them. When we finally found them, we had three limits of walleye in two hours. All caught on crawlers in 12 fow. It was enjoyable to have the lake to ourselves and not playing bumper boats. |

Indian Hills / Mahto (Red Butte) Bay Area - Thursday, July 7, 2011
A nice mix of walleye and sauger came in over the weekend with the best success in the early morning around goat island in 10 feet or less. One couple had their limit and were back for breakfast by 9!! Not everyone had such great luck but we did see most boats landing 3-5 fish. Parshall and New Town are still doing great but be ready to fight the crowds. Our area of the lake will be relativly quiet as the Friends of Parshall Bay host a derby as well as the prefishing the Governors Cup will keep the east end hopping. I still think we are a few weeks behind with water temps but as the temps are hitting the 70 degree mark that should spark some action.!! Campsites are filling fast so give us a call if your headed out!

Lake Sakakawea - Tuesday, July 5, 2011
not fast and furious, but darn sure some size to em, and talk about feisty. A guy thinks he's got a big northern on... stripping line off the drag.... turns out to be a good walleye. Of course, we did the noble thing and let the really big ones spit the hook at the boat rather than risking injury to them:-) |

Beulah / Douglas Bay Area - Saturday, July 2, 2011
Perch perch and more perch --- white bass white bass and more white bass. By the size of these ---somebody mention lack of forage------ we had forage and plenty of it during the last two dry years. Anyway two dink walleyes and flat of nite crawlers on the perchos. The big sak -tanked ----- |

New Town / "River" Area - Tuesday, July 5, 2011
We fished out of New Town Marina on Tuesday, mostly north and west from Little Knife Bay to west of Beacon Island. Lots of hammer handles everywhere but the walleyes were two throwbacks for each keeper. Way in the back of Little Knife Bay near the road, the smallmouths were pretty active. Our bigger fish were on cranks in 6-10 ft.. |
|
New Town / "River" Area - Tuesday, July 5, 2011
The New Town to Skunk region is not fast and furious by any means. Two man limits are possible but it will take all day or exactly being in the right place at the right time. It is more fishing than catching. |

New Town / "River" Area - Monday, July 4, 2011
Picked up a few walleye here and there in the bays, on crawlers in about 9-14 fow, tried the new town marina bay picked up 2 in the morning about 18 inchers, went down to reunion bay took the rest of the afternoon and tons of northerns and several busted spinners to catch three more.
Wasnt the fast and furious action that i was told about last week. My son did however catch a 31 inch Northern on a crappie rod, was pretty exciting. The end of the day we had 5 in the 18-20 inch range |
|
Garrison Bay / Pick City Area - Monday, July 4, 2011
Fished a few hours by sportsmans centennial Sunday night. caught 4 walleye, 5 northern, few smallmouth, lots of perch. steady action. Spinners and earth worms in 10 feet. |
|
Garrison Bay / Pick City Area - Sunday, July 3, 2011
fished garrison bay yesterday, used crawlers in flooded grass areas from shore drug back on lindys and jigs. red or orange hooks & jigs. keeping the bait moving seemed to catch more walleyes and dead sticks caught everything else...I mean everything. carp, pike, smallys, white bass, goldeyes, suckers, perch, catfish, drum, etc.
ended up with a limit of 20" walleyes |
