Lake Sakakawea - Friday, May 6, 2005
Just heard a report this morning, they are catching some real nice 'eyes on the south end of Gull Island at Van Hook. I was told they were catching them from shore. I guess there was one 8# and a 10# pulled in. I was down at the ramp last night at Van Hook. Its in and usable.

I was planning to go paddle fishing one day next week and maybe try some walleye fishing around the New Town area or Van Hook. Is anybody been out there trying it these last couple of days. Would appreciate any kind of report.
Thanks |

Tim,
I was amazed to see the east end last year. Douglas bay looked horrible, and was over to deepwater,, sad. Things look really bad right now, and I dont see it changing any time soon. Maybe I can find my rod and reel in the shoreline now. I lost it west of reunion. If anyone finds it it is a Berkley Series One. Might be on rough shape, lost it 3 or 4 years ago in 15 feet. Havent seen New Town in years, with all family gone, no need to go back. Well, Im done with the non-post reports, sorry. Luveyes |

luveyes,
Yep, I know the name. In fact, I cruised by the house they use to live in this weekend! Small world... Sorry for everyone else but this is no report. I want to ask marke if he thinks the water is muddy on the river. Went across it last night to hit the Buckskin up for dinner and to me the water looked very VERY muddy. I have a feeling this year is going to be bad. Less water in the river means less water to dilute. Could be a Van Hook Arm year. Oh and luveyes, you'd puke when you see the north part of Van Hook. Well, maybe you wouldn't because you can't see water unless you use a pair of bino's!!! Tim Sandstrom |

Lake Sakakawea - Sunday, May 1, 2005
I have made several trips north of the casino ramp with pretty good success in the last couple of weeks. Try and find a spot where there is sand/silt shoreline with exposed rocks with deeper water adjacent. I have had some luck working the area next to Antelope Flats with one particular spot being awesome. I am thinking the walleyes are spawning in the area, but can't prove that for fact. Some days cranks are out producing live bait rigs. I have been slowing down my cranks by attaching a 1 1/2-2oz bottom bouncer with 6-10 ft of mono for a leader attatched to the crankbait. This allows me to go extermly slow, keeping my crank down, and slowly the "wobble" of the crank. I have caught several fish over 25" this way. REMEBER THIS THE TIME OF YEAR TO RELEASE ALL FISH OVER 18" so we have fish to catch in the future.

there is no ramp at skunk that I know of, unless you count the shoreline as one.

Does anybody know how usable the ramp is at skunk? I know the one at the casino is good but steep, right now i don't care if i have to drop my boat in the water from an airplane. I need to fish and skunk is usually my choice to unload the boat, and how about McKenzie Bay any word on that? I'd appreciate some info thanks.

The only two ramps i knwo for sure are open are Sakakawea State Park and 4 Bears. I think government bay might be open now too. Hopefully they get crackin and get more open, other wise it will be a long wait at the ramps this year.

luveyes,
The ramp at Deep Water is not useable. I was there last fall there was about 2 feet in the water. The water is lower now than it was then. Some other people have told me its not usuable as of now. I think they are going to relocate the ramp somewhere but I don't know much more abuot that. As for the other places I have no idea. |

Stizo,
How do things look on the East End of Sak. Planning a trip up maybe soon. Centennial, Seven Sisters and Douglas look OK for the summer? I would assume the ramp at Deep Water is OK, it was last summer and seemed like they extended it long enough to get throught this summer. Luveyes Tim, You are from New Town? Do you recognize the name McMaster? I lived there in the summers growing up and my grandfather was the mayor there for many years and my family owned the New Town News. Havent been around that area for quite a few years. I assume if you are in your mid 20's that you may not recognize the name, but your family might. I suppose that Horsehead island and most of the north islands on Van Hook are part of the north shoreline now. Anyone out there have recommendations on fishing in August? Im going to be up to Garrison the first weekend of August for sure. Any late summer hints would be appreciated, dont want to look like a fool with all of the family there. Did well mid August last summer around the Seven Sisters. Thanks Luveyes |

Tim,
Yes, they have been launching light boats and they have been doing very well around the islands. As of right now...could be different. All I know is that it is going to be very good after they recover from the spawn. I guess they are really stacked in there. Less room to swim around. Can you imagine what it must look like down there? All of those walleye returning to spawn in a gymnasium when they used to have the Metrodome. Stizo :) |

marke,
Yeah north is a good place to start. Ha ha on the screen moving comment! My brother works on the bridge and they've been pretty much shut down the past few days. Usually have well over 30 hours in by Wednesday but the winds have kept them to only about 14 according to my brother. Hope this isn't a sign of whats to come! Any changes to the casino ramp? Fish are north of 4 Bears Bridge I do know that. Makes for a long, ROUGH ride though with this NW wind. Why is this screen jumping up and down? Got to go to the dentist tommorrow!

Stizo and very,
Thanks for the reports. 4-Bears sounds like what Reunion was last year. Almost a waste? Harley said that Parshall Bay might be getting one. Knowing him (met him for the first time a couple weekends ago) he'll get it done. Quite the cat that guy! Stizo, Did you mention that smaller boats had done okay on the east end already?
