Was on the ice between the old highway 83 ramp and Mallard Island on Saturday. My son walked on with no problem. The ice is 20 inches plus still in this area. Was at Douglas Creek the weekend before and there was a few open leads adjacent to the shoreline but still plenty of ice

Anyone have a recent ice report for the East end, Douglas Bay areas? Wonder if it's getting tough to get on the ice, or if it's doable.
Thanks |

Lake Sakakawea - Monday, April 8, 2013 | |
Over the last week my brother has been out on days off. Usually averaging around 15 pike a trip his last outing before this weekend provided 24 iced northerns. One small walleye.
This weekend we went out on Friday night looking for walleye. Ended up keeping 6 throwing back three or four. They weren't monsters, just the good "eaters" as they say. Not bad for a slam bam trip. Definitely has peeked our interest for early shore fishing if cannot get the boat out. Walleyes mostly came out of 12 feet. That is way shallow for us sauger guys!! On Saturday we headed out to a completely different location. Never fished it before but the idea was to try and find a big northern and as the day light lessened get ready for walleyes. In the end, didn't catch a single northern (which was actually a blessing in disguise). The walleye fishing was pretty decent. Caught several keeping 12 between three of us. They weren't giants either. Every single fish but one was a male. So the males must be showing up on spawning grounds. Females haven't showed up yet? Not sure but oh well, it was a change of pace as this year we've really been after the saugers. So was good to see some gold. Had some heartbreak cats too (around 6 or 7 of them). Some white bass and one smallie. Was a cluster of species! Depths ranged from 12 to 24 feet. On Sunday we got out late. Got to the ice at 2:30 and fished to 4:30. This time for northerns in mind. Caught 17 or 18 total and kept our 10. They were small again, 2 to 6 pounds. Talked with Game Warden and said the biggest he's seen all year has been 17 pounds on this side of the lake. So, it is time to move yet again looking for that batch of bigger fish. Or maybe we just need the right day? I get the feeling they just aren't going nuts yet?? Tanner and Bob did have some bigger fish in one area last week with a few up into the low teens. So that will probably be the targeted location going forward. Really cannot go wrong if you want action. Multiple fish days are frequent with how there are so many pike in the system. Well, not like it is no-brain easy but if you can get away from too dirty of water there should be some gator action almost anywhere unless you are in a creek system and they have enough water to run up them. From my expierence, it gets hard to catch them if they go into creek mode. |

I have never fished the lake before and am looking at heading over to target some of the smallies this spring/summer. Any advice on landings to use and locations to find the bass? Thanks a lot! Tight Lines! |

Moved shop over to Shell Creek in search of bigger gators. Ended with only five small pike and a few missed flags. Moved locations once. Lots of area to cover so need a couple days! Not sure if water temps are at prime even though creeks are running at a slow clip.
Lots of ice. 38 inches in many areas. Minimum of 30 in others. Sheared my pin off on the old beast but luckily hadn't quite broke bottom of ice but just enough to make grabbing fighting by hand easy. |

There definitely is a pike problem. Three of us went out to non traditional pike location from 1:30 ish to 6:15. With five lines out we iced 53 pike and had several other swing and misses. Many were small but some reached the solid pickle and smoke status. Biggest was 14 lbs 10 ounces. Had a break off due to faulty line, a fray or something. It was a solid fish but hard to know if it was over 14 as felt similar.
Tried our good spot for sauger and walleye in evening getting only four small fish. Gonna hit up traditional areas to see if big pike are staging. Most I have heard caught for bigger pike are upper 30 inchers but guess a couple pigs have been caught. |

Went out east of skunk bay by independence point. Took my 4 wheeler as not sure what ice conditions were going to be, I wouldn't take a vehicle out right now as the snow cover on the ice is kind of tricky , I think a guy would have trouble getting stuck. Ice is 36" to 40" thick, had a hand auger and was totally exhausted out of shape! Caught sauger #2- #3 pds all through the day in 60' to 40' FOW. Caught perch not big but ok in 50' fow. Had a pole set at 15' caught pike but threw back. limited out on sauger. Hope this helps out alot of you thinking of going out! Good luck!
