Lake of the Woods

I was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion of a place to rent a cabin for a week, preferably the Minnesota side. None of us have our passports right now and just really don't want to go through the hassel, if thats even possible. It will be more then strictly fishing, the guys fish, the girls hang out, type of thing. So what Id really like is some place with nicer cabins, semi close to town, and a place with a baitshop/marina and some place to keep my boat in the water, either my own dock or just a slip in the marina, restraunt and bar on site would be a plus but thats just me. If you know anything like that I'd really appreciate some ideas.

The other question I had was fishing the lake itself, do you need a passport?

You don't need a passport to fish the MN side, you actually don't need a passport to cross into either Manitoba or Ontario but that's a different story.

From what you're looking for you are basically limited to either Warroad or Baudette. Springsteel resort is by Warroad, there are many by Baudette.

Rocky Point is a wonderful place to stay with great fishing however it's not close to any towns if that's a concern. Warroad is the closest, nearly 20 miles away, but they do have a licenced restaurant with good food. There are a lot of seasonal campers at Arnesens and they tend to fill the bar and restaurant up at night.

You really don't need a passport to cross into either Manitoba or Ontario? Do you mean on the water or if you drive over?

You don't want to cross over to Canada.  Can get into some trouble.

You'll see floating piers/markers that will signify the US/Canada border.  If you cross past them, by law you must report to the shoreline border hut.  You'll also be fined for any live bait taken across the international border.

Just stay south of the piers and all will be good.

Arnesen's is one of the bestplaces on the lake say it every year. I am from round them parts, and never heard you can get across and back with out passyporty.

we did all the time when we were kids, we would drive the 5 miles up to Sparkys place to get drunk. haha good times.

Riverfisherman.  We stayed at Cyrus Resort by Baudette right on the lake last year. There is a boat slip and its just a quick drive out to the main lake from the bay they are in. They have really nice cabins, and a bar, etc. and are reasonably priced. You wouldn't be far from alot of other resorts and not far from Baudette. I'd check out Cyrus. The people were extremely nice that took care of us at the Resort too. PM me if you want any other information. Have a good time!

No, you really don't need a passport to cross over into Canada by land. Canada never has, or doesn't presently require a passport to travel into their country if you are an American citizen and can prove it with two government forms of identification. As far as that goes, you don't really need a passport to get back into the states either as long as you have the above mentioned 2 government forms of identification with you. Drivers license and copy of a birth certificate, which you can order from the Dept. of Health for a couple bucks is all it takes. A passport makes it easier, but if it's a one time trip it won't delay you more than a few extra minutes if you don't have one.

I've posted this information several times on here and there is always someone who "knows I'm wrong", so my suggestion would be to call a border crossing and ask them yourself. Since you'll be in that area anyway call the Sprague Manitoba crossing and inquire about crossing into Canada, then call the Warroad MN port of entry and ask if an American citizen actually needs a passport to get back into the states from Canada. I know what the answer to both questions are even though many don't, but say they do.

I fish Buffalo Bay, the Manitoba portion of Lake of the Woods and it offers the best walleye and northern fishing on the lake, hands down. You can catch fish from opening weekend until freeze up in shallow water on a very consistent basis. Not much nightlife up that way however.

The Ontario side of the lake north of Baudette, from Morson on towards Sioux Narrows offers some of the prettiest scenery you will see anywhere. Lots of islands and clear water with sandy beaches. Another nice place as far as scenery goes is the Northwest Angle, which is in MN however you have to cross into Manitoba, then back into MN to access it.

Good luck, there are many opportunities on LOW in the 2 Canadian provinces and 1 state it covers!
