I have seen some earlier this summer, not lately though. Most fish we have caught this summer have had relatively empty stomachs but nice and fat walleye. Talked to a guy at the "cleaning station" Sunday and he said he had some shad in his livewell. I think its the shad that are keeping them shallow, JMO. Im sure there are deep fish also following the smelt, but I think the shallower fish are easier to catch. no pun intended.
