Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Wednesday, December 22, 2010
Hit Langliers bay this afternoon - fished the mouth of the bay in from about 10 to 20 feet with smelt, minnows, chubbies, and various teardrop tipped with minnows. Absolutely no action at all. One tiny perch foul hooked but not even a northern and we had about 4 lines set for them.
Ice thickness was a surprising 24 inches, much less snow than in Bismarck and could drive everywhere. The good news - no fish to clean! |

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Monday, December 20, 2010
I fished yesterday from sun-up to sundown. Started in 19 ft of water and couldn't keep the pike off the lines. Non stop action of 2-5 lb'ers. moved into about 14 ft of water and still caught them. overall caught about 15 throughtout the day, snapped the line on about 15 of them as well. did manage to catch 1 23" walleye along with a real nice crappie and a perch. A guy I was with also caught a bunch of pike, but he fished in about 10ft of water and caught 8 perch. color wasn't an issue for the pike

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Monday, December 20, 2010
Fished Beaver Bay several times last week. The walleye bite was strong early in the week, icing 17" - 22" fish steadily during the morning and evening bite in 17 - 20 feet of water, fishing over structure. By Wednesday, the bite slowed considerably - I spent most of the day on the ice and would only catch a couple of fish, but the when you do get catch one - it is usually a nice fish. The northerns and little perch hit all day long and provide some great action if you have little fisherman along that can handle the cold. Yesterday I went out and only caught 1 - 23" walleye, however the little hammerhead northerns kept you busy all day- probably caught 25 little northerns.
Not sure if the increased water level or active weather pattern is slowing down the bite, but for me the walleye bite slowed considerable - doesn't seem to be an evening bite anymore???? Interested to hear how others are doing. |

fished under the bridge at beaver bay this afternoon...caught 3 northern all 3-4lbs...lost one at the hole about 6lbs. all fish caught on a yellow hook with a minnow.
no walleye!? seen a ton of people out by the river though... ice was spotty there...had a pressure ridge to the north and ice went from almost a foot to 6 in, deffinately iffy for a truck |

Ice fishing the North Dakota side of Lake Oahe and the Missouri River has officially kicked off with enough ice to keep us mobile to locate fish. We’ve been finding good numbers of fish from Beaver Bay and south. Best methods have been jigging using your electronics to figure out what’s going on. Best baits for us have been Lindy Darters with a minnow head when jigging and the small Lindy Slick Jigs on deadrods with a full minnow hooked at the tail. Jigging has out-produced the dead rods but you really have to work them. The nice thing is there is a lot of activity on the screen to keep your interest level high all day. We’ve been having good luck with numbers of very nice northern pike, a lot of six and seven inch perch which will make things interesting. And of course, some very big walleye for this time of year. Along with the big walleye will come a lot of little walleye – and I mean little. Things are looking great for ice fishing Lake Oahe and the Missouri River.

Headed down to Langliers this weekend and that portion was still half open so we headed it back to Beaver Bay and there was around 3-4 inches on either side that we checked. The quality of the ice wasn’t that great as that portion was covered with snow. Fished it for about an hour or so and had three nice pike and one small walleye. Saturday we went south of Beaver and north of Cattail where ice conditions were much better and obviously had a clean freeze. There was 4-5 inches of really good ice. As far as I made it was about ½ mile from the shoreline so that area should be around 6-8 inches by this weekend. Again, we didn’t fish too much as we were more concerned about ice conditions. We did have two dandy walleyes that came unbuttoned at the top of the hole and a lot of 6 to 7 inch perch. The word was that the Fort Yates area was still open on Friday so use extreme caution no matter where you fish. It’s best to walk with an ice bar to check the ice and drill holes to get the best answer to the ice thickness.

The word is there's two inches in Beaver Bay and the lake froze across yesterday. That's just the word - I haven't seen for myself yet. As soon as I do, which will be soon - I'll let everyone know.

If anyone drives by the Beaver Bay area, Prairie Knights Casino let us know what it looks like. Open, frozen?? I would suspect it's going to freeze over this week sometime?? What do you ladies and gents think?

Well, we didn’t think it would ever get back to the way it was in May and June, but just like every fall – it is. The walleye bite is one and lots of big ones. Easy limits of very nice walleye are taken fishing around Bismarck pitching jigs with minnows and plastics or vertical jigging. Yesterday, we headed down to the Beaver Bay area and I was surprised to see clear water. My hopes instantly were at an all time high. First 100 yards of pulling cranks in 20-30 foot landed a 22 and a 21 incher. Another 100 yards landed a couple more 19’s. Fished for a total of three hours and ended with eight dandy walleye and had a couple nice ones come un-buttoned.
