Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Sunday, May 8, 2011 | |
Fishing activity near Bismarck remains very strong with numerous boats out catching fish. The Big Muddy Walleye Tournament was held yesterday and anglers came in with very impressive weights to say the least. The winners brought in a limit that averaged around 6lbs per walleye. Other top 10 teams averaged 5lb per walleye. Most anglers are using jigging techniques with minnows and plastic to boat fish. Others are also using crank baits, but the majority are jigging. The tourney folks did another impressive job running a great event. This truly has become one of North Dakota’s great fishing tournaments with a large following. Fishing should remain consistent near Bismarck for some time and the lake will be picking up real soon.

Went to Beaver Bay today....caught 10 pike of various sizes. Several trucks drove on the ice today without any problems but getting off was more eventful. There obviously was slush around the edges a few days ago but it had refrozen. At some point today trucks broke it back up at the base of the ramp so some got off without assistance, others needed a pull. My recommendation would be to walk on and should be fine.

Despite the bitterly cold weather that’s been passing through that last couple weeks, we’ve still had guys out fishing in their bigger shacks. The bite remains the same around the Beaver Bay area with an occasional fair walleye bite(click her to see Saturday’s action) and we have a few holes that have had a consistent perch bite going along with some good pike action. The pike seem to be everywhere there are trees. The perch have made for some fun though. Action all day and lots of them. Been able to keep quite a few in the 9-11 inch range with some smaller and a few bigger ones.
The pike bite should definitely keep getting stronger in the bays with spring approaching. It will be interesting to see how many big ones are pulled through. And, I haven’t been able to predict anything with the walleye bite this year, so I’m not going to go there. Anyways, good luck fishing. |

i dont think the water is clear enough for spearing. its not to bad but what i am hearing the bigger fish are staying out a little deeper. I am heading out there tomorrow after some perch with my wife. If anyone wants the northerns we catch let us know. We will be happy to give them away. Will be driving a black honda pilot. if not, back in the hole they go.

i was wondering where at on beaver bay you were finding walleyes? Do you have to go out toward the mouth of the river? I found some perch and northern's around the tree area when you first drive off of the boat ramp. I have been really wanting to catch some walleyes but cant find them anywhere. I know there are way too many northern in there. Damn things keep tangling up my lines while i am trying to catch a perch dinner. Thanks for any info, i will really appreciate it!

Don't drive on. I mean, you can try, but I wouldn't advise it. It's a mess and with the wind that was blowing today, yea. 4-wheelers are iffy to good - but snowmobile or 4-wheeler with tracks is going to be the ticket from here on out.
