Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Sunday, March 7, 2010
Fished Saturday north of Beaver Bay and only picked up one that wasn’t any longer than my hand. Fished really hard, punched a lot of holes in the best real estate in a 5 mile stretch that I know of. Still can’t figure out these fish this winter, but I kind of had a feeling it was going to be this way. Too much flooded cover and I think the fish are too spread out. Anyway, next weekend is out – so I’m thinking it’s time to start getting the summer gear ready. This summer will be some of the best to be seen.

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Sunday, March 7, 2010
This is a report from the Pollock/state line area. technically SD, but relevant to Cattail south. Three of us fished the Pollock area Friday and Saturday. Used an ATV to get around most areas but the snow is very rough, snowmobiles much better. Pickups in the bays but no further because of hard packed snowbanks. We had no luck even fishing till dark both days. Only a handful of cigars. Heard of some fish caught nearer the state line, but couldn't get there with an ATV. Fished through 30+ inches of ice from 16 through 40 feet along the channel.
Had a great time - those folks that run the West Pollock Resort are really nice people - we are impressed every time we go there! |

Bobkat, ice conditions are great from Beaver and south. No worries there, but as I always say, use caution anytime on big water. Pressure ridges are hard to see and covered with snow for the most part, so you never know what you're dealing with when crossing ridges. 4-wheeler is very do-able. Vehicles, no way unless you're just going to fish the bay. As far as north of beaver - ice conditions were good, but I did run into one spot where I had 24 inches and than another spot around 18 inches or so. Still alot of ice, but we all know what it feels like to have the auger go through earlier than expected. My heart only skipped one beat:)

Anybody know ice status from Beaver Bay to the south? Can you use a pickup or an ATV rather than snowmobile? Thanks

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Tuesday, March 2, 2010
Fishing in the upper portions of Lake Oahe was a little tougher this past weekend. Fished north of Beaver Bay on Friday afternoon catching two walleyes, one of which was a nice 22 inch Lake Oahe walleye caught right away. Didn’t mark enough fish to keep my interests up for Saturday. On Saturday, we headed south of Beaver to an area where we caught them a few weeks ago. And of course they weren’t there. Made a few moves and did run into some on Saturday. The first couple hours were pretty good and the bite slowed as evening approached. We ended Saturday with 7 keeper walleye/sauger, two nice catfish, one pike and one giant ling (eel pout).

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Monday, February 22, 2010
Was out last week Wednesday afternoon and fished around the Cannonball. Were set up around 4pm, hit one spot and fished for about an hour. Marked a few fish, but no takers. Moved to the second spot by around 5pm. Fished till dark and picked up a 19 incher and a 20 incher both jigging. Huey had another nice one that came off under the hole – sure it was a walleye. So, there are some fish moving north and should get better and better, but we’ll see what happens with water releases from the dam. That could turn good ice into bad ice very quickly. So use extreme caution from now till ice out. Go to Lake Oahe Fishing for more information.

bobkat,
Fished beaver bay on pres. day and ice was only 19" to 20" and trucks would only make it about a 1/2mile from the landing. Was there trucks out at cattail or were you just speculating a truck could travel over the Ice, and was there a thin layer of ice-water over the ice yet under the snow? I had a slow day at beaver with exception of a few nice northerns and dinker perch. |

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Friday, February 19, 2010
Went to to Cattail Bay yesterday and pulled a 'train' of a couple calf sleds behind a snowmobile. Three of us got three small walleyes and couple of Northerns and though slow, the weather and outing was great! Surprisingly we found that the snow had settled down and compacted and a snowmobile wasn't even required - an ATV would have been able to travel fine or even a pickup could have driven easily across the ice. Saw a few people out at a distance on the Ft. Yates side but don't know if anyone else was having luck or not. Fishing should improve over the next month or so. Ice depth 30 inches or so should last a long time.

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Friday, February 19, 2010
Any success this week? Thinking about heading over to Fort Rice and trying it on the west side of the lake. I have tried Beaver Bay but with access so poor haven't had much success. Does anybody know if the Fort Rice side would be better and what depth to try. Thinking about heading there tomarrow.

Lake Oahe (North Dakota) - Sunday, February 14, 2010
Headed down to the Lake Friday afternoon and were fishing by around 4pm. Two of us managed two nice walleye for our efforts and had a couple that came un-buttoned and marked quite a few on the vexies. Had three more join us Saturday morning and were set up just before sunrise. There were fish in the area, but I think the cold front had them a little off. We didn’t get a chance to move around due to the wind, so we sat still and managed 5 walleye and two pike by noon. The biggest of the weekend was around 20 inches or so. Had a couple come un-buttoned again. Most fish were caught jigging in 24-28 FOW along the channel next or on top of old trees and weed beds. Again, the fish were there but I think the front had them a little off so we’ll just give it a chance to straighten out and get after them when it does. Access was a little more difficult from the previous weekend. The 4-wheeler actually got stuck in a few slush pockets on Friday. Had to tow out with the snowmobile. So, it’s best if you have a snowmobile if you want to stay mobile. Good luck and good fishing.

Fished out of the Rivery today, lots of snow. Will need a snowmobile to get anywhere on the river. fishing was very slow, only iced one norther and a perch. About 12+ inches of snow on the ice. How was the fishing at catail? Has there been people out there? Any luck.

Thanks for the info percheye. I'll definitely try it sometime within the week and post with any success. I do have some tackle already in the box that'll work, but it won't hurt to buy the girlfriend some valentines and tell her that I had no idea it was already in there. Fresh caught dinner always makes her happy.

sxmi,
you might want to try right in the town of Fort Yates at the boat ramp. Go east from HWY into town and take a left when you are close to river, ramp is on north end of town. The channel comes pretty close to that side. I'm hearing good reports from Cattail Bay but you have to go about 3/4 mile or more to get to the channel if memory serves. Yates puts you directly across from Cattail but it's not nearly as far to find the lip. Check Google earth, they have awesome low water pictures. BTW thanks to Oahe Guides, nice work and thanks for sharing. As far as tackle goes try a buckshot rattler tipped with minnow head or a chubby darter with the vex. Silver and whatever should be good based on the earlier report of baby white bass in stomachs. Good luck and welcome to Bismarck. |
