Hows the fishing been with all the runoff and silt being washed into the lake?

Lake Darling - Wednesday, June 22, 2005
fished darling sunday, dad got a 3lb small mouth and a 4.5lb walleye, we caught a few other smaller small mouths and had a lot of large walleyes follow cranks up to the boat. lrg smallie was caught on a flame lil ripper and the 4.5lb walleye was caught on a gold and black husky jerk cast towards shore and retrieved through the weeds.
water was crystal clear with tall weed growth. water temp was 70. water was being released from the dam. seemed to get most of the fish in the very SE corner of the lake along the rocks. PS. There are several lakes that fish should and shouldn't be released by our own judgement depending on fishing pressure, food source, stocking etc.. take Sakakawea for ex. take all the big ones you can...it just might save the lake. soon it may be too many hungry fish and not enough smelt. |

Stitzo that is one of the dumbest things ive ever heard, we cannot promote catch and release on this lake and not on that one, sober up and think about it.

Zanderman,
The walleye in Lake Darling do not reproduce successfully. It relys on stocking. It does not matter if people take the big ones during the spawn becaue the eggs will not develop anyway. Lake Darling is managed for the wildlife not the fish. The Refuge and COE drain it at will, and flush all of the fish downriver periodically. That is why Lake Darling is so poor right now. When Canada decides to release water, then we have to also. The stocking program is very active on Darling, and that is the only thing that is going to make any kind of impact on this body of water. Returning large fish back to the water does nothing but provide another fisherman with a chance at taking it home. So, feel free to take big fish from Darling. It will not hurt things. Infact it will reduce the number of larger fish so that the smaller stocked fry will have more of a chance to make it to adult size. Stizo :) |

The Grano end of the lake tends to be the best for Walleyes. Lately the fishing has not been great on the North or the South end. It used to be a great fishery, I think it just got over harvested. I saw several very large fish taken from the lake during the spawn. As fisherman its up to us to do what we can to perserve the species we all love to hunt. Good Luck............Z

Just moved out here last summer. I was wondering which end of Darling is better to fish now, the north or south end (Grano being the divider)? Thanks for any responses.

Lake Darling - Monday, June 6, 2005
my son was up to grano on friday with a buddy and fished late afternoon into evening. Only fish caught was a 9.75lb walleye. My son brought it home to mount, he will now have a 14lb salmon from garrison, a 24lb northern from north of four bears bridge, and the new walleye. He's pretty excited and only seventeen the fart.

Two of us fished Grano area Thursday late for about 4 hours, Caught 9 Pike, largest about 8 pounds. Caught 2 walleyes one 28 inches and one 19 inches.
We fished cranks on the points with the light wind hitting them. I tried to post this yesterday but it would not post. Oldfisherman |

Went fishing yesterday started out around 2pm and after zero luck with the walleye we switched gears and started chasing pike. Ended the afternoon with 5 one of which was really nice sized not huge. Had tons of follows right to the boat as well. All in all we had a blast we had our best luck with large rooster tail spinners in blue and red.
