Fished on the south end of the lake yesterday afternoon. We caught alot of crappies and silver bass. The fish we are catching have been deep, 30ft. We also caught a 29 inch walleye last night. Friday a couple friends of mine were out and caught alot of nice crappies, silvers, and perch.

Fished in front of dam caught two little 'eyes pretty deep. I heard there was a bite on up north past the crossing around the island. Just wondering if it's still on.

Lake Ashtabula - Friday, September 2, 2005 | |
We were out last Sunday and fished on both sides of the lake and across in front of the dam. One catch, a medium sized silver bass, trolled using twisters and any other hook we could dig out of the tackle box. Not much biting, fished from 3 to 8pm. Even though the fishing was poor, waves were big for our kayaks and it was a fun paddle!

Can you define a 40-fish night as slow? Well, Im going to anyhow. Holmes and I landed 40 bass last night in a three hour outing, most on jigs.
The white bass were still biting on Ashtabula, but not with the voracity experienced in weeks past. Most fish came on live bait, though I doubt it was necessary as I caught several on just a 1/16 ounce jig and a blue flake crappie tube. Even got one on the flyrod with a clouser minnow. Holmes landed a 15.5 inch smallie that was in all honesty, the shape of a footbal...I mean FATTIE BO BATTIE! Those lake smallies sure are thick compared to river smallies. Tight lines...the season is wrapping up. |

White bass are still nuts on the Big Green.
Caught about 80 in 90 minutes last night, and there weren't many casts where we didn't have at least a strike. We used light and ultralight rods rigged with 1/16 oz jigs and crappie tubes tipped with minnows, and then without, and it didn't make a bit of difference. If you're taking kids fishing this month, Ashtabula is the place to do it. Find a weedline or some rip-rap and get casting, or better yet, look for active fish rising near shore. You'll also find some nice perch and the occasional crappie mixed in too along the structure or weedlines. |

To clarify, the gill of that poor little 'eye was ripped in the hookset, not the taking out of the hook - that ended up impaled in the corner of the mouth. Don't want to seem like I can't safely unhook a fish! ;)

Went out last night to troll for those lazy walleyes, only small ones around the Sundstrom's area. I had my first case of slot-kill on Ashtabula last night, as I hooked a 12" walleye, and when I took the hook out I saw that I had ripped the first gill on his left side. Disappointed, but them's the breaks with a slot I guess. Maybe it'll make it, but I felt bad releasing it.
Trolling was ice cold. Two bulldoggers, and two small eyes for me, not much better for Holmes. Then, about 9 pm after going to mark the old bridge on the GPS for ice fishing, we decided to jig off the point for whatever was biting. Apparently everything was biting!!! We caught smallies, whites, perch and even a crappie on jigs and twisters from 2' of water out to suspended in 25' In total, I think we caught 40 fish in that last 40 minutes and had a hit on nearly every cast! |

I have a Question about how steep are the ramps? I just bought a 16ft crestline and only have a small suv to pull it so don't want the ramp to steep for the first time with the boat and no the lake. thanks brandon
