Lake Ashtabula - Friday, December 17, 2010
So anyone been to the lake yet after the snow. I heard from a guy that lives on the lake that he has seen zero car/truck traffic on the ice. Im going to really dull the hell out of my auger blades if i have to drill holes in the gravel driveway at the cabin.

Why doesn't the Barnes County Wildlife club put up some cash to have some roads plowed on Ashtabula? Bob at the Crossing will never do it, cuz that guy doesn't want to be busy! If I owned that place it would be a no brainer, you would get your money back plus a whole lot more if you kept access open to the lake.

Well just got off the phone with mom in VC and they got 8 inches and its still snowing. Well i guess we will have another wonderful year of watching the new ice castle sit in the driveway. anybody want to come sit in it with me and get wasted. Maybe this will be the year that Bob from the crossing decides to make an ice road and make a ton of money. I doubt it but then again im a business man and that is what i would do. Just think ice roads down the east and west side with a few roads going across the lake to connect them. I venture to say that with minimal advertising he could easily have 150 houses out there. I mean where else can people use them. We will see but i have a feeling the house is going back to the storage shed unused again this year.

Lake Ashtabula - Tuesday, December 14, 2010
Went out by Sundstrom's this morning and fished from sunrise to noon. Set up on the high side of the channel in about 20' of water. Brought home a perch, an eye and a pike. Pretty slow morning overall. All fish were caught on a red hook and minnow. They did NOT like jigging. I had a few fish respond to the jig, but never took it. All bites came when I wasn't jigging at all.
I originally set up in about 26', halfway down the channel and didn't get any bites. Tried in the channel for a while and actually caught a few jigging, but they were really small perch and eyes. I was shocked at how thin the ice was. Most places had about 6-8" of ice. The first 2 inces were frozen slush. I thought it would be about 10" after the cold weather we've been having, but there's a good layer of snow that must be insulating it. |

Don't know what we were doing wrong, but we saw quite a few fish on the camera, but only got one tiny walleye which we threw back. Couple northern, two perch, and a handfull of walleye --- again, all on the camera, not on our hooks. Still fun though. We were one of about three groups on the ice, not including two permanents, out by the Crossing, real close to the Fish Tank and the bridge. Bobbers and minnows.

MNNDfisherman,
for early season ice a lot of people do have good luck toward the sougthern part of the lake by sundstroms landing. I usually fish more to the north up around the crossing. You will catch fish both places. What i like to do is find a place along the edge of the channel in about 8-13ft of water where the fish still have quick access to deeper water. Somtimes i fish up on the flat next to the channel and have one rod just feet away from me in the channel. This past weekend we did some jigging and bobber fishing and both worked equally well. I guess i am more of a bobber and minnow guy. If you dont already have one go to the ND game and fish website and download a contour map of the lake and that will help you out a ton. If you make it out we would love to hear how you do. |

Lake Ashtabula - Monday, December 6, 2010
Was on the ice holes drilled and all set up at 5:45am on sunday morning. We fished until noon. we kept 5 very nice perch. threw back 5 smaller walleys. We lost one right under the ice. The ice was crysal clear where we were so we got a good look at the one we lost and it would have been in the 17in range. Ice was great ice, crystal clear and right at 7 inches thick. I think that there will be people driving on it maybe by the weekend. Going to be a couple weeks for me though. There was about 2.5inches of snow on the lake which is a blessing so far this year.

Lake Ashtabula - Wednesday, December 1, 2010
was out at the lake on saturday and to my suprise there was very little snow on the lake. Not sure how much there is now with the last storm. The lake froze up while it was snowing the the first inch or two of ice im sure is not the best but it will be fine if we can keep the snow off it. There were 2 portables on the north east side of the crossing by the boat ramp. I didnt have my auger so im not sure how thick the ice is but i bet its 5inches or so. hopefully we get a nice long no snow ice fishing season to make up for the last 2 years.

Lake Ashtabula - Monday, November 22, 2010
drove by the lake yesterday and it was about 98% frozen over. i think it froze up while it was snowing so im sure there was slush on it when it froze so we are going to have bad ice this year. Now with the new snow on it ice fishing with big houses may be over already this year. I have a 2007 ice castle and it has been fished in 4 days in 2 years. 3 winters ago i spent 21 days on the ice and the last 2 year combined only 5. Damn snow sucks. I cant wait to get back into a drought cycle.

Lake Ashtabula - Sunday, September 19, 2010
The crankbait bite is good, we done our best with Salmo Hornets in the #4's and #5's. Holographic Hot Perch and the Black and Gold was the hot patterns in the Salmo Hornets. Trolling 2.5 to 3 MPR. Depths ranging from 8' to 12' near the channel. Largest SM Bass hit on top of the shallow lip off the sharp breaks into the old river channel.
Very nice SM Bass on the cranks, up to 19", lots of bass. Walleye was slower but I suspect it should pick up again soon. |
