Lake Ashtabula - Sunday, February 5, 2012
Drove south of the crossing on Sunday morning. Set up in the channel in 22 fow. Fishing action was not hot but it was steady. Perch schools moving through all day. Catch one or two then done. Caught one nice 8 pound northern which was fun. Caught a few really small walleyes and 1 keeper. Ended up with 18 perch in the 9 to 11 inch range and threw back a bunch smaller.
Was a fun day on the ice and the weather was perfect. Ice in the area was about 20" thick. People driving everywhere in the area. Very little snow on the ice. Did see some open water on very east shore, must be a spring. Ridge on the east side looked weak. Get on the lake on the west side. Drove a snowmobile south of the crossing near the bend toward Katie Olsons. Drilled a hole and found 8" of ice. Other areas had 20" of ice. So the ice is not completely consistent. Be careful out there. Water clarity is very good this year. Must be all the water flushing the system. Also saw clouds of fresh water shrimp in the lake. Good for bait and growing perch, bad for fishermen. |

Fished Mel Riemans Saturday (1/28/12) and the ice was 11-12". I would be careful driving on the south end of the lake right now. Anyone have any ice reports from Sundstrom's or Katie Olson?

Lake Ashtabula - Saturday, January 28, 2012
Went fishing on Saturday. Ice was a solid 18-20 inches very little snow, perfect ice fishing conditions. Guys were driving everywhere, Iset up in about 15 feet just off the channel. Perch were crazy, most in the 8-10 inch range, biggest was nearly 14. Kept a limit of perch and one eye about 14 inches. Threw back a bunch more smaller ones, no pike, saw one big bullhead swim under the shack bout 4 feet down.

How is the ice looking on Ashtabula after this warm snap? I have never fished there in the winter and want to get out hopefully Sunday. If anyone has any advice for the lake feel free to inbox me. Will be taking a couple guys that have never ice fished before and would be fun to find a few fish. Thanks for the help |

I have been fishing in the Bayshore area and the fishing as been quite slow the last couple days.....ALSO! i was thinking of making the move to the kuders bay area and did a little glassing from up top before the move.... there is a large presure ridge that has opened up completly across the lake just south of the bay and also one to the north...with the wind blowing the last couple days it has caused a large area of open water. Just wanted everyone to be aware of this....BE CAREFULL! I dont suggest driving the big rigs out on the ice quite yet.....and if your out running around on the four wheelers just make sure you know the area....Ice is 12" where im at.

Lake Ashtabula - Friday, December 23, 2011
Great day on the ice. Found the channel edge and worked the perch early in the day, catching 20 or so and keeping 12. Walleyes were biting periodically out in 22 feet of water mostly on bobbers. All the perch were caught in 8 to 10 feet of water. Ended up keeping 9 walleyes and throwing back quite a few smaller ones. Small jigs worked for the perch. Walleyes wanted glow lures.
East side south of the crossing was open 3 weeks ago but now has 6 or so inches of ice. There was a start of a pressure ridge with open water near it. Do not drive on the east side south of the crossing yet. A few trucks driving on the west side of the lake. I would wait a little longer guys. Be careful. |

Had a good day on Friday. Fished for about 2.5 before dark. The girlfreind and i caught about 30 fish keeping 7 eyes and 14 perch. Just set up on the channel edge in about 15ft of water. Ice was a perfect 10 inches of clear ice. Was a great evening on the ice.
