Lake Ashtabula - Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Went out by the Dam on Tuesday around noon and fished until dark.  Set up on the channel in 25 FOW and caught two nice 12" perch around 2pm.  Then nothing until about 5:30 and picked up two more when moved to a hump between the channel and deep part of the lake.  Had about 10 tip ups go up but fish would let go after pulling less then a foot of line out.  Ice was about 28" thick still with no sign of weekness.  Water starting to pool on top of the ice in spots.  A few spots had up to 5 inches of standing water.  Looks like the lake was down 3-4 feet by the way the ice contoured up the banks.  My guess is they drained it down some to fill it back up and stop some of the flooding down stream.  Overall I could of had up to a dozen or so nice perch if they would of been more aggressive.

I was told that they are going to drain the lake down to almost nothing, the only thing left will be the old river chanel and i was just wondering if anybody else has heard this or if there is any truth to this. If this is true the corps must have really high hopes of it filling up good. Any info is greatly appreciated.

went out for most of the day and tried a couple spots on the southern end of the lake.  got plenty of nibbles but not a single fish.  pretty sad day.  forgot to buy wax worms but we had a few different size minnows.  tried different hooks and depths but nothing really worked.

I was out on Thurs, Fri, and Sun. Went to Devils Lake on Sat.  It was a little tough going on Thursday, I was alone and nobody else on the lake so I put the foot to the floor (thank god for lift and tires) Fishing was ok and on sunday I started the day by pulling someone out then was ok after that but if your going out towards the middle be prepared for alot of slush!

Wondering about lake access, hope to get out this coming weekend if possible! Wondered if driving was an option or if we are going to need to walk out!!!!

In regards to the walleye lenght minimum, it remains 14" but may change with the 2010-2011 proclamation. They discussed the reason for possible change at the GF advisory meeting this fall! Seems the walleye population is doing well enough that the smaller fish do not need protection!

Barnes County Wildlife Club will be holding their annual ice fishing derby on January 16th at Sibley from 12pm to 3pm.  In case of inclement weather or bad ice the alternate date will be February 6th.   The cost is $10 per hole, limit 4.  There will be $2400 in guaranty prize money.  You are allowed to fish in an ice house.  If the conditions are good you will be able to drive out before 11:30 setup your house and cut your own holes, no vehicles will be allowed on the ice after 11:30.  Only tournament officials will be allowed to drill holes after 11:30 so if you want to setup a house get there early!
For more information contact Jay Holm (701) 490-1293 or Jill Christensen (701) 845-2087.

From the ND GF Proclimation.... Nothing about lifting the 14" minimum on Ashtabula.

  • Removed the 14-inch minimum walleye size restriction on Lake Elsie, Brewer Lake and Dead Colt Creek Dam. All size restrictions for Sprague Lake and Lake Tewaukon are also removed
