Jim Shockey

Was catching up on some shows on the DVR and watched about 3 Jim Shockey episodes and am reminded how much of a STUD this guy is....anyone else see the episode with his father and father-inlaw hunting deer, pure classic....he is also the only person to complete the North American Ultimate Slam (which includes shooting all 30 North American big game animals and having them all make their respected record books) with a muzzleloader....that is pretty amazing...

He does appear to be the real deal doesn't he?  All the father and in-law episodes are great. I've seen several re-runs and always watch them from start to finish, very funny!!

If only my life involved hunting.  Heck, I think any of us that love to hunt could do the grand slam if we were given the opportunity.  Granted, he probably made it for himself but you guys know what I mean.

Yes, I like his shows.  They seem more real than many of the shows out there.  Plus, it is obvious he lives to hunt.

He just may be cooler than chuck norris. Plus if you use his powder in your muzzleloader you can shoot 5000000000 between cleanings!

I pretty much despise all hunting shows and everybody in them.  I can't watch a single one of them anymore.  They make me gag.

sorry my post didn't finish. But all in all to me it's so abnormal it doesn't even catch me as normal guy anymore. They make it seem so much like a rich mans sport(depending on a lot of shows, but this is how most are).IMO its fun to watch, but so unrealistic for normal everday guy. But like I said I will still watch it.

If there is one sport that truly can be bought, its big game hunting. shockey is one of the few shows I do like but that too is big money hunting. Buckmasters is a complete joke.

I disagree.  If you pick and choose your programming wisely there are some good shows out there.

But yes, many out there are becoming some sort of fence hunting, reality TV combined with poor humor.  I suppose that's why the spoof is going to be popular?

Jiffy,

Is that a deal?

I know a location of a plant where we could fire up a batch.  Although, we are shut down today.  Go figure.  Nothing like a 6 to 7 day job turnng into a three to four week job.  Paving in October is awesome.

I don't have satellite TV anymore so I don't have access to all those huntin' and fishin" shows.  However, the one show I do miss and the man himself, is Tony Dean Outdoors.  I haven't seen Jason Mitchells show, but in my mind, no one can beat Tony Dean.

Agreed, The Big Time is the best show on the Outdoor Channel.  It is really the only one I will watch other than non-Bass/Saltwater fishing.  You see a lot of shows with Team Realtree (I think) hunting the Milk River near Malta, MT.  I have heard they are not very well liked around there.

Anyone else despise Bass and Saltwater fishing shows?  Maybe I am just weird.

I don’t want to kill the animal, but I do want to warn it, and say “hey, I think you’re pretty neat, but I respect your distance.” There’s bears out here, there’s mountain cougars, and biting goats.

Nope not weird at all. Bass and salt water stuff sux. In-fisherman has been a disapointment since Al Left IMHO.  Back to the hunting shows Shockey is about the only one I can stomach anymore.

The Huntley Way,Eastmans Outdoor Journal, and Tred Barta are great shows to watch.  The Crush is good for obvious reasons.  However, any hunting show done in texas  or africa makes me turn the channel. The Nudge gets the nod too just becuase of him.

Tony Deans tv show should have been on the radio because all he did was talk. Very little pertinent infomation shared. He fished with a buddy and talked for a half hour. Funny thing, never did see him eat a Puggsley!

I witnessed IMO the worst hunting DVD I've ever seen this past weekend, Drury Outdoors, absolutely garbage.
Shockey aint bad, The nudge is the man with the "spirit of the wild" by his side along with Fred Bear, also Tiffany is a babe. All obvious information and would watch all three over a house, private practice, or CSI episode.

The Bucks of Tacomonte (sp?) is by far the worse show out there.  Drury is bad, but I still watch it where as the bucks of tacomonte I turn my tv to HGTV right away.

There is one I will tend to NOT flip the channel so fast on.  Its on FSN and I think it's called Veterns Outdoors or something like that.  They take Veterns out that have come back in less than perfect condition and pay for everything.  The one I saw they took a guy on what was supposed to be a management doe hunt but when they got out there they told him he could shoot a buck.  That one is pretty cool I guess...

The hunt itself was weak as hell though.  On some big high fenced ranch down in Texas.  Personally I'd rather go on a morning dove hunt in good old ND.....or watch paint dry of course.

If any of you are looking for a good DVD to buy get anything by "Tines Up"  very real world hunting and shed hunting.  There stuff is not all done up with the cheesy reanactments.  Those shots are the worst part of hunting shows.

I'm with Jiffy on most of these shows.!  Some are OK.  We only just got the Outdoor Channel a few months ago and here's my impression of too many of them, for what its worth!   Probably not much.....but here goes....
Seems like most of them start out by simply BS'ing and joking and Har Har ing, then they get a ride out to a fully enclosed stand via a brand new well washed 4X4, then sit till some well trained animal arrives to eat the bait, then gets shot after trying to build a bit of suspense by whispering, etc and acting like they are really doing something difficult!.  Then a whole bunch of high fiving and whooping which must disgust a lot of hunters and even more neutral non hunters assuming some watch it, as if they just accomplished something special or difficult to do!    Then the inevitable "score" bragging stuff!   If shot by a 'muzzleloader', its always a modern in line with a scope, and some seem to bait to 20 yards then shoot ewith a high powered scope sighted rifle!  Huh??
I've been watching some of these shows, and surprisingly to me, I saw several where then animals were hit (IMHO) too far back and the arrows didn't seem to penetrate more than a few inches, the animals ran away, then were displayed later on as "harvested!"   Huh?  The arrow penetrated only a few inches on one deer, then fell out??
Then there's the predictable 'tracking him" scenes, and surprise!!  There he is!!!  Wow!!  More hooting and hollering and high fives and yelling about 'scores!'     Severe rigor mortis with one or two animals even!    At the end there's always a commercial for the outfitter and a testimony or two.
Actually, Shockey's, the few I've seen, seem pretty good.  Most seem to involve hunting as well as shooting.   There are some others that are pretty good.   The ones produced by John A in ND are pretty darned good too!    Baiting for bear hunting is about the only way to get them in heavy brush, but I sure get tired of whitetail after whitetail after whitetail down in Texas!
With a lot of those shows, I'm sure with Jiffy!   Almost had to go to the ER and see Luveyes the other day for an antinauseant shot after watching one in particular!  LOL

I prefer to actually hunt and fish, not watch someone else do it.  When I get back to ND I will always have something better to do than watch a hunting or fishing show.  I can plant a tree or check on the ones already planted, grab my fishing gear and go fishing, hunt for sheds, clean guns, and if all else fails.....look at the honey dew list.

Jiff doesnt like em because of that best of the west show.  Them boys show em up with them Jap optics.

Now back to the shows - I really dont like the ones that show the bullet impact or arrow impact.  Why not show the shot from the Hunters aspect and then the animal down.  Why show the suffer part --- why give the no hunting huggers more ammo.  Why not show the gutting part.

Next one is some guy sitting in a blind or whatever and shoots a big game animal.  First thing he does is whew!  Like the F####er was sweating over sitting in that blind.  Why not just look at the camera and smile and go out and get to the animal to get it cleaned.

Stay thirsty my friends

I think its hard to fit a whole lot of useful information and footage into a half hour show, so they're all pretty cookie cutter:  stroke the sponsors, show some footage, stroke the sponsors, shoot the animal, stroke the sponsors, grab the horns, & stroke the sponsors to end the show.

I do watch them, but I only have versus (which sucks) and there usually isn't anything else on worth watching on the weekends AND  I HATE TO PAINT.

I do enjoy watching Mike Hanbach on Versus.  He seems very knowledgeable and down-to-earth, and gets excited and genuinely appreciates the animals and his good fortune to hunt for a living.  He also occasionally lets a few bad words slip out which I think is funny and keeps the show real.

Life is tough; its tougher if you're stupid!!!!
