Is the sucker harness a thing of the past?

Growing up on the Iron range (yes i was once a ranger) we used a lot of live sucker minnows in a split wire harness with sliding weights above and below to pinch them in place. Some came with a spinner that hung below the bottom weight others did not. If you took the hook off the bottom you could use the m in the dark house as decoys. They worked fairly well with a 6 inch shiner also but a 8 to 10 inch sucker would go all day if he didnt get too chewed up.

Not familiar with the sucker harness. But nowadays it'll have to be called the creek chub or smelt harness here in ND. Suckers have been illegal bait for a few years.

Sounds like a good technique though.

I dont think frozen smelt or ciscos wiggle very well. But we did use a different method with the smaller baits like chubs. We'd take a heat lamp bulb and open it up at the base where it screwed in. Then we bent a hanger so it wouldn't slide out of the glass because the side was tapered. fill it with water and drop in the minnow. The minnow was untoucheable and swam around like a goldfish in a bowl. Of course we did break a few when our aim wasn't so great with the spear.

You still can get those style of sucker harnesses around Grand Forks or just inside MN at the local bait stores.
