Just got the new iphone 5.  Wondering if any of you have found/purchased any GPS or lake chip apps and how well they worked.  I was going to get a new GPS with a lakemaster chip, but wondering if there's something for the iphone that would work just as well.

The navionics app is really good if its available for iphone. Only down side is it drains my battery rather quick.

Navionics.  I think it's about $10 but it's a nice app.  As you zoom in more contours show up.

Does the Navionics work as a GPS as well?  I want to make sure I can mark a hot spot so I can find it the next year -- or plug in some coordinates to find my buddies' hot spot.

I know you can pin or mark a spot, not certain about coordinates ill have to play around more. The gps works well though

Yes you can.  And you can then highlight it and it'll show you info.  Here's a couple screens from my iPhone5 in Navionics.

First pic's a marker I added, second's the info from that marker.

I just bought he navionics app and its really good for getting the idea of how a lake is made up. On smaller lakes dams sloughs don't use it to gauge depth as what I have found they are quite a bit off. Although I think they use the g and f contour maps. Also it dosent pinpoint location, in the couple places I have used it so far I could be 20 yds on the ice and it will show me standing on shore, but oh well maybe that's asking too much. As far as getting an idea of contours on a new place it is awesome though. If nothing else it should keep you from drilling holes into the mud.

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

The reason your location is bad is because most lakes don't have great cell phone reception on them. This app makes me wish they had a signal booster you could buy for your boat/ice shack to get you 3-5 bars of service.

My fav feature on the app is the tracking. I use it on the boat and it tracks just like the chip does. Sure helps you get back to the dock in the dark on newer lakes.

I get one bar on bula, Just have to stop and let the gps catch up with me well walking out every now and then.

I don't think phones have as good of a gps reciever as actual gps's do.  Also, a gps has WAAS to make it more accurate and I'm not sure if cellphones have that built in.

This really comes down to battery life and availability…if you have the ability to keep your phone charged or don’t care if the battery dies then this is a very good app.

However if you plan on using it extensively or for as your primary source of navigation on water ways I would suggest going to a hand held especially if you don’t have your iPhone in an otterbox.

I have trouble keeping my phone charged as it is without a GPS application sucking the lifeforce out of it…I also tend to believe your strictly GPS units are more accurate and get better signal…

But it you are only using it every now and then for $10 it’s worth to have on your phone…it matched contour line for line with the ND Trax program for Ashtabula…

You can also download free GPS apps to double check your specific coordinates.  I have found that some apps like the lakemaster app can sometimes be up to 25 feet off.  But there are others that are more dialed in, and this is when using the different apps on the same phone without moving.

the navionics app is great! the maps are way more detailed than the ones you get from game and fish. if you know you wont have cell reception there is a way to download an area of a map that you choose directly to your phone. 10/10 app!
