Intermittent oil leak on 6.4L engine

Intermittent oil leak on 6.4L engine

This may sound like a stupid question, but has anyone else had what appears to be an intermittent oil leak from the driver's side front of the 6.4L diesel in their F250, mine's a 2009 model?

A couple months ago I thought it leaked for a few days after a mere 14k from having the front seal replaced, almost called the dealer and then it disappeared and I chalked it up to my imagination (more like AC condensation dripping and taking some oil from the latest oil change).  Well, last Friday I noticed about a 10 inch diameter oil spot under my truck while at work, and when I got home I saw the same thing from where it was parked the night before.  Saturday, I again saw a 10-12 inch diameter oil spot at home so I crawled under and it looked like oil had been dripping from the front on the driver's side. 

Fast forward to today and there was no oil spot under the truck this morning at home, nor at work. It's not a big deal if it's leaking as it has a 100k warranty, but this intermittent thing has me puzzled.

WTH?

p.s It now has 58k on it and had the front seal replaced last winter at 45k.

Perhaps you're only seeing the leak if you shut it down during re-gen when the engine/exhaust temps are much higher and you're getting more expansion/contraction.

Wild guess, I know jack-squat about the 6.4L.

Interesting guess, but I tend to keep track of the regens and I hadn't put enough miles on it to regen during the days the leak was evident. However, the day the leak disappeared coincides with a fishing trip that had to have a regen.

is the dpf on the drivers side on this engine?  this could be numerous things.  one thing it could be is a bad injector on the left side.  It could be pushing raw fuel out into the header and it's mixing with the carbon and dripping out a joint.  this looks just like oil when that happens.

I believe that Ford DPF's are all on the passenger's side.  Fuel tanks are on the drivers side.  Pretty sure that only 1 bank of cylinders is responsible for re-gen though and I have no clue which side that would be.

I just upgraded to the 6.7 a couple weeks ago, my 6.0 was an absolute nightmare for repairs.
Of course just as the warranty was no longer is when I ended up putting thousands into the engine and still had thousands more to go when I traded.

cylinders really don't have anything to do with the regen.  all the regen does is burn the particulate out of the exhaust filter which is after the turbo.  There are sensors that measure the restriction in it.  When it reaches a certain percentage of restriction it triggers a regen.  During regen raw fuel is dumped into the canister and the particulate is burnt out.  Temps reach upwards of 1300 degrees.  At least in trucks they do.

Will do, I was a little surprised that the earliest I could get it in was next week.  Must be a little spillover from the busy western part of the state, the other couple times it needed to go in was only a day or two.  The service guy was leaning towards it being fuel as opposed to oil.  Sure looks like oil, but as eyexer noted mixing a little dirt/carbon in with diesel makes the thumb/forefinger test a little inconclusive.

I needed a some repair work in SW ND and am not going to name names, however I was told to drop my pickup off and they would get to it in the next 6-12 weeks.
Needless to say that doesnt work for me to well, as we are a 2 vehicle family and my wife wasnt willing to walk to work for upto 3 months while my pickup was waiting to get repaired.....

There's a whole generation of Americans that have no idea about the truth of the Clintons, particularly Hillary

What did you find out?
I have 1,000 miles on my 6.7 now, really like this new diesel engine, wow for power.
Hoping to stay out of the repair shops for a long time.

Cylinders are involved.  Extra fuel isn't injected directly into the DPF.  It's injected into one bank of cylinders during the exhaust stroke, pushing the fuel through and increasing exhaust gas temps.

Had the truck in last week for an oil change and to get the engine looked at.  Regrettably something came up and I wasn't able to leave it there for the day and it goes back in tomorrow for the leak.

One of the diesel techs poked his head underneath though and said it looked like an antifreeze leak from the upper radiator hose.  This kind of surprised me as it was certainly not what I expected given the oil drip left behind, but in retrospect I didn't look all that close.

Still not sure why even a radiator hose would leak intermittently.

MissedAgain, yeah I surfed around on that forum earlier and while I didn't see a similar question, i also didn't take the time to start a new thread.

Update on the leak.

It was indeed the upper radiator hose leaking antifreeze and rinsing oil/dirt off the side of the engine. 

No big deal, just tighten the damn clamp is what you all are thinking.  NOT!

The radiator hoses are now quick-connect and have unserviceable O-rings.  So if/when one starts to leak you get to replace the whole thing. 

Parts and labor =  $270

Amount covered by extended warranty = $0
Amount covered by original Ford warranty on powertrain to 100k = $0

Extended warranty doesn't cover "wearables", identified as brake shoes, belts, and hoses.

Ford Powertrain warranty to 100k includes the engine itself, tranny, and front/rear axles. If it doesn't directly help the wheels turn it's not in the powertrain.

No, I did not.  After having a sewer problem at the house, a bad radiator in the Exploder, and the leaking radiator hose, I was simply beaten into submission with repairs.

However, getting the replaced parts is my normal SOP.
