Heading to Indian Hills this weekend.  First time ever in that area and have no idea where to start or where all of the local names of places are even at.  Any pointers for up there?  I have checked the fishing reports on here from Indian Hills and it sounds pretty slow right now.  They say people are fishing deep, around 35'.  I saw Greg S.'s report from fishing Tobacoo Gardens and it looked like he did well with saugers pulling cranks in 18'.  How far is it to Tobacco Gardens from Indian Hills?

by vehicle I hope you mean!!!!!!!! ?????  hour plus by vehicle.  More than likely a lifetime if by boat!  A lot of rough water between Indian Hills and tobacco!!!!

The arrogance of the present is to forget the wisdom of the past.

By land:

Roughly an hour to New Town (I think around 60 miles...maybe it is only 45 ish).

New Town to Parshall is about 20 minutes (17 miles).

Parshall to Indian Hills is roughly 40 minutes (35 miles).

I'm going off guessing.  I never really have figured it all out on paper.

Now, by boat, you are talking probably shorter distance but it better be a smooth ride and you better have big horsepower

OK, sounds like we are definitely not going to be trying to get to Tob. Gardens.  So what areas should we be targeting at Indian Hills.  Anyone do any shorefishing around there too?  We have kids with so are hoping for some decent shorefishing as well.  No matter what species.

If I were you I would go out of Indian Hills bay and then turn to the west and go 2-3 miles and there is a bay that opens up and if you look to the north you can just see the Voight farm. At the west and east opening of this bay there are fish in 30-40 feet of water. Look for small clouds of smelt with you depth finder and when you find them go really slow with lindys and minnows.
Next stop is about another 2-3 miles west and if you look on the north shore you will see a couple minny buttes along the water. They are called the buffalo humps  go right out in front of them about 5-600 yards from shore and there are Islands that drop way off in to deep water. Fish the edges of them all the way into 50 feet.
Good luck.

You may find their sheds! But I'll shoot them dead!

Target the south shore from Mahto to the west area of McKenzie.  Actually, if you can go by boat to McKenzie Bay I would suggest maybe going up into the Little Missouri a bit.  Not sure how it has been up that way for the last few weeks.

Other than that, I'd probably head east on the north shore from Indian Hills and work the steep cuts.  One can't rule out the mud flats to the west but it has been a bite dominated by deep water fishing.  I'd refrain to south shore, Mahto Bay islands and over toward Fossil and Goat Islands.

Shorefishing?  Depending on what you want to catch you can just about go anywhere you want.  Throw a few rods out with minnows and a few out with crawlers and you should get into some carp, catfish, shiners, occasional walleye, maybe some whitebass and possibly some northerns.  Again, I would concentrate on deep areas.  Find deep cuts and shorefish them for chances at walleyes and other "prefered" fish.  Personally, I'd be hoping for carp action with the shore rods!  Blast to fight.

This is the single place I fish the most. I was there last weekend and did do some fishing but the weather, primarly the wind, was brutal. The girl doing the creel survey was there on weds and thrus and out of about 15-20 boat she didn't weigh more than about 10 fish! we went out sat morning when the weather was still a little iffy and knock out five nice ones in a matter of 45 minutes, unfortuantely when the sun poked out the fishing died completely! Sunday was brutally rough and we came in with our tails between our legs after a couple of hours. The girl doing the creel survey told us we did the best for the day on saturday with the next closest boat weighing in three fish. coinsidently, they were clean there fish the same time we were which means the afternoon bite was little to nothing.

Now as far as fishing tips, I'm not really gonna help you much here as there is a fishing tourny this weekend at Indian Hills and well I'm not reall willing to give away to much before the tournament, I think you'll understand. As slow as it is, I'll only say that fish have been caught in depths between 16ft-35ft, typically running spinners or lindys. not much for jig action and the crank bite is a little slow but worth it if you can connect on a couple. Watch the wind blown points, shorelines, the mudlines and even the pepsi flats have produced some decent fish. haven't done much fishing on the south side this year but in the past we've had pretty good luck. This year I have only fished the north side of the lake and have been both east and west.

As far as distances goes, your about 15 miles from deepwater, 22 miles to the entrance to vanhook, 32 miles to the vanhook railroad grade, and about 9 miles to nishu bay. These are all by water. Keep in mind a there's not a lot of places to hide from the wind in this area and west and southwest winds can be ugly! Good luck, maybe we'll see you down there!

Good luck in the tourney Yar!  I hope you fare better than me.  Was a brutal tourney year for me that is for sure.

I haven't been out fishing for almost three weeks.  That is not normal for me but I needed a break from it all.  Slow fishing, expensive and well, I've had some stuff going on so I couldn't go anyway.  Can't say I have missed it too much but the sauger bite by New Town up to Tobacco was pretty darn good.  Maybe Sunday I'll put the ole Tiller back in the water.  To be determined..

I was up there the first two weekends in Aug. the fishing is slow...best chane is to work the flats, which is basically the advice WSWAT gave. We fished the south side one day from McKenzie to the pump house didn't mark any fish.
Fossil and Goat Islands and Mexican hat are all east of Indian Hills on the north side of the lake, they are some nice bays if the winds up. If eye fishing slow troll cranks around those bays never know when you'll hook in to a big northern.

As far as fishing the flats, that would be the stretch from becon point(which is west of Indian Hills, northside where the lake turns north) all the way down to pepsi point (which is the entrance to Indian Hills) there are fish here you just have to find them either troll or just drive slow until you start marking fish.
I taked with a few fisherman while I was up there, we're are starting to think the fish are buried in the flooded trees, wind permiting it may be worth it to slip-bobber or pitch jigs...I have not tried it yet up there but I know around Fort Stevenson it was working.

Flats had fish for the DWC but very few.  Day one they were all plucked in pretty quick fashion and many who had fish on the flats during prefishing found them all to have vanished.  Flats are some of my favorite fishing but this year, at least for me, it has been a year dominated by structure fishing.

Something with water temps deep and the food sources hanging deep.  I'm sure fish are in the vegetation but during the DWC and Gov Cup that pattern didn't exist.

In simple terms, give it a go everywhere because this lake has been a puzzle this year.  Good luck.

Tim, you should try to fish saturday and atleat come join the tourny. It's just a little one, $50 a team and just suppose to be a good time so there's not a lot of money tied up in doing it. Actually that goes to all the FBOers, come join us at the BIte Me Invite Tourny at Indian Hills, the more the entrants the better the payout! I must be dreaming again of actually cashing in, lol!

corfit7, if you're just going down with the family and you're NOT fishing the tourney, come find me down at the lake (I'll be there thrusday night) and I'll be glad to show you where to fish on some aeiral maps that I keep in the camper. Shoot me and Email or a PM and I tell you how to find me. I have no problem helping a guy out that's trying to show his family a good time! I have found kids don't care how big the fish are so long as there are lots of them, ha ha!

Good luck, hope to see you down there.

Yar,

I actually would like to.  Kelly asked if I would come and get in it but I have things going on (moving, etc).  Plus I need to get to the badlands to find habitat pieces for my mule deer mount!

Maybe next year!

Here is the latest report that I recieved today Via email:

Some good limits came out of less then 35 feet forthe 1st time in a while. The warm weather seemed to help. We have not had any storms ( thunder and Lightning ) for a while so that is sure to help. Wednesday we only had a few boats out. One boat landed 7 and the others I did not see come in. Sorry!! The north side was good to the west for the most part and some nice 24 and 23 inch walleye came from goat island. The Bite Me Tourney is looking to have about 20 -25 teams. Yes you can still get in. I posted the registration day for the 15th but there are lots of folks still wanting in so we will keep it open until Friday the 21st. I just have to have some idea of how many to prepare for. If you are in the tourney stop in Friday are pick up a flier that will let you know how we will run the flights etc. Believe it or not this is the 1st year we will run the tourney out of our main ramp! Hope to see you then. Kelly

*Indian Hills Resort: Lake Sakakawea’s elevation on Aug. 19 was 1,842.6 feet above mean sea level. Some walleye limits are starting to show up. Try working the north shore of the big lake to the east of the resort in 15 to 20 feet using nightcrawlers.
*South shore: Not many anglers have been out lately with the approaching new school year so reports have been limited in recent days.
*Van Hook: There haven’t been many anglers out but those going are finding some walleye working shallow. Try jigs and minnows with slip bobbers in 7 to 8 feet in the trees. Overall, though, the activity has been limited.
*Garrison: The east end of Lake Sakakawea remains fair for walleye – weather permitting - using Lindy rigs in 30 to 40 feet working the edges of sunken humps with a slow presentation. Try the mouth of Douglas Bay.
*Pick City: The east end of Lake Sakakawea remains inconsistent for walleye although some anglers are working Steinke Bay on the north shore or around the islands surrounding Sakakawea State Park in 8 to 35 feet. Try spinners and bottom bouncers with live bait or Gulp when working in the shallows or slip bobbers and floating jigs if you’re in deeper water. Some smallmouth bass are starting to showing up. Salmon remain slow but try 65 feet over 75 feet and deeper.

*Yellowstone River, Sidney, Mont.: Streamflow is 9,510 cfs while river stage is 5.78 feet

Yup, I just got that up earlier this afternoon.  Sounds like fish are moving shallower (which is odd) but if they do and continue to move shallow the flats will be good.  Should have listened to yellow .

I forgot the Bite Me Invite was this weekend. My wife fished her first tourny with me last year when we fished it, A good time and a very fun tournament. Kelly and family fed us well afterwards. We took third, wish we were coming back.
