ND Burn Ban and Fire Danger Information

North Dakota is a state dictated by seasons.  Some years we have beautiful weather, some years we have a mix and some years we have weather that's less than ideal.  Perhaps the most dreaded weather in North Dakota--and any state for that matter--is drought.  During times of drought hardships befall farmers, ranchers, wildlife and basically affects every person in the state.

During times of drought there are special circumstances that might be of concern.  Two common themes are water conservation and fire warnings or fire bans.  As sportsmen, we have an obligated duty to me aware of fire warnings and bans.  We are out in the field nearly all year long and using special care will help in assuring we...

Field Care Tips: Preserving Your Trophy
By: Jamie Risovi

Deer opener throughout much of the country is considered a holiday to most deer hunters.  This is especially true for over 60,000 North Dakotan hunters that enter the field.  Some are entering for table fare while others enter for the buck of a lifetime but one thing is for sure...we all enter the field for the memories.  In doing so, we need to take the necessary steps to ensure our harvest is properly cared for.  Award winning taxidermist Jamie Risovi from New Rockford, ND has some helpful tips for both field dressing and preparation for preserving your trophy...

The Eyes of Oahe
Bill Schneider

If you like to fish for walleyes--often called “eyes” because they need such big ones to gather as much light as possible down at the bottom of the lake where they almost always dwell--you’re probably like me and dream about fishing South Dakota’s Oahe Reservoir. I finally had my chance last month, and now, I’m already trying to figure out how to get back there for more. Oahe is one of South Dakota’s Great Lakes, highly acclaimed as one of the best walleye fisheries in the world. And it’s massive, to say the least,
Boat Ramp Etiquette
By: Mike Peluso

As a kid I used to ride my bike down to the river so I could watch people loading and unloading there boats. I can't even begin to tell you some of the things I have seen over the years while sitting on the rocks. Some of it has been funny, some scary and some down right stupid. I do however have a problem with some...
Our Outdoors: Transitions
By: Nick Simonson

The only constant in this life is change. That’s a good thing, because one of the best constants to remember in angling is that change generally equals fish. It is the changes underwater that can produce fast action and add fillets to your frying pan.

Keying in on a spot-on-a-spot is an oft-relayed mantra in the world of sportfishing. Whether it is a change in flow on a river or the alteration of bottom composition by some glacier-deposited boulders on a lake, these areas provide fish with something that attracts them – either cover, food or both. Finding where these spots are and learning how to fish them is...
North Dakota Outdoors: Public Lands
By: Doug Leier

Modern-day North Dakota hunting is partly the product of licenses and excise taxes providing the money needed to secure habitat, develop land improvement projects, gather research and population data, and enforce fish and wildlife laws.

Other major factors include annual and long-term weather patterns, and national agricultural policy, both of which are basically beyond our control.

Knock on wood, harsh winters which can limit resident wildlife have...
Segmented Leadcore - Big Water Trolling Part 1
By: Corey Perman

I grew up as a self proclaimed “river rat” and I have spent thousands of days on the Missouri River South of Bismarck, ND chasing walleyes, getting beached on sandbars and honing my skills on the this unique and amazing system. However, growing up fishing the Missouri River I was never exposed to big water trolling. I was a jig guy that would troll cranks if I had to. In March of 2006 life took me in a different direction and I moved to Western, NY on the shores of Lake Erie. This opened an exciting new chapter in my life. I was forced overnight to become an...
