If you want more deer, don't shoot does

I hope nobody on here that is complaining about the deer numbers has purchased any doe tags for the last couple of years.  Instead of waiting for the G&F and mother nature to magically make things perfect again, we should all be doing the right thing and foregoing the harvest of any does until the populations in our respective areas has rebounded.
I'm not a biologist, but I do know that a dead doe takes 2-3 out of the population the following year.  Just because they make doe tags available doesn't mean you have to buy them.
There is a time for killing and there is a time to be a steward.  We need to take some of the responsibility on ourselves and not be hypocritical.  Just my .02

If you don't buy them someone else will. If you want to save a doe, buy the tag and don't fill it.

Buying a doe tag is a great excuse to go hunting and not come back with the "perfect doe".

Over the years, I have spent a small fortune on doe tags and never filled a one!!  Just my choice.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

Where were you 3 years ago, when there was an abundance of deer?  Maybe if you would have started advising us then, we wouldn't be wondering where all the deer went?

You can't aim a duck to death.

Someone please mention the Population Dynamics so that I don't have to. Bucks and does are born on a 1:1 ratio and they should be kept that way! Shoot all the bucks, yeah that makes sense. Kill the part of the species required to create life. Might want to re evaluate your thought process after that statement. Use common sense for God's sake.

????? --- -- when did they give out bonus buck tags?    Its been a shoot all does fiasco for how long --- since 00 or 02 -- you werent alive when they shot all bucks --- so where do you guys come up with this stuff?

Lets try this all over:

Arrowem said -- it should be kept at a 1:1 buck doe ratio --- hence reduce the number of doe tags.

Der that is better.

Really?  You think it is possible to perform Quality Deer Management on an entire state?

What I was saying is that each of us should take responsibility for ourselves in being proactive towards trying to manage our deer numbers.  If we think as a group of hunters that the deer numbers across the state are too low, then don't shoot does.  Whether you don't buy tags, or do buy tags and eat them intentionally.  More breeding does means more deer densities.  Isn't that common sense?  Obviously, mother nature is the wild card.

Don't say that "well if I don't shoot one than somebody else will".  That's not taking responsibility for yourself.  If you don't think the population is down, then by all means go and shoot what you can or want, but if you do think the population is down, then maybe you should help do something about it.

It's really not any different than what many of us do on the water.  You catch a big female walleye, most of us will let her go with the mindset that she is the egg layer and will help replenish the walleye population.  Keeping males is not a big deal as one male will fertilize many females.  Same thing with deer.

This is about raising numbers, not B&C bucks.

It's kind of like saying . . . I said the stock market was going to crash for years and it did, so I'm right. Obviously numbers were going to come down from all time highs, especially with the crappy winters. But since all your amazing predictions have come true after years of saying it, we'll now call you Nostradamus.

So having guys that get 3 buck tags per year isn't taking out more than one buck eh? I know, it's tough to count that high. People do NOT shoot all of the doe tags they purchase. Think about it for one second. If you have consecutive years of multiple buck harvest and minimal doe harvest what do you think is going to happen??? Use your noodle.

For years i have been buying all the doe tags i can get and not filling them. Its time us as hunters start to work together to better manage our state wide deer herd....clearly our G&F only cares about the MONEY from the tags and not the QUALITY and or QUANITY of our deer herd. Ive always wondered what north dakota could be if we had a better managment system.....such as "4 point" or better or "earn a buck"???Or even upping the buck tag price to 50 $ and lowering the tags given each year....The money would probly average out....I know some wont agree with this...but the ones who THINK , LIVE and BREATH deer hunting year round know and reconise the the problems with how our G&F handles our game in north dakota. I do know our winters in NDAk our very tough and play a big part in not only our deer herd but all game, I just think our G&F could better utilize funds from tag sales to provide better wintering habitat for all game species....and this is all just my .02

A pheasant landed on a power line to roust south of Dickinson yesterday at 7:15 am and knocked out power to over 10,000 customers. I call it pheasant revenge...
Wait until these deer figure it out you wont want to be singing this same song.
