If you had 1 billion to invest?

Would you put that billion into some sort of fund that would pay you say $450K/yr for the rest of your life?

I'm trying my best to figure out the math on a presidential election and for some reason I just can't make the numbers work out.  If you lived for 30yrs after your term was up that's still only $13.5 million.

What gives?  You can't make enough in the private sector to ever make that up either.

It would repay itself in 30 yrs, one billion at 3.5% return is $35 million, with never adding to the principle it would pay its value out in 30 yrs.

But here's the thing, you don't get 3.5%, you get a flat $450K or whatever the presidential pay increases to.

I was thinking you meant to invest the billion, not waste it on becoming the POTUS

So is no one going to reference the movie Office Space here?  I can't now that the Shriners was mentioned.  Doesn't seem right to be that guy.

Seriously though - that would be so much responsibility.  Investing for the future and charitable responsibilities would seem to be the right thing.

You guys hi-jacked my thread!  I wanted someone to explain the economics of spending 1Bil to obtain a $450K/yr job.

I'm gonna PM Tim and get you all banned for mucking up my thread.

WWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

(grin)

This didn't go as planned but I guess big dreams  are more fun to discuss than how much it costs to be elected.  So, let the imaginary philanthropy continue!

Horsager, just buy the Presidency.  Then you'd get the best medical care, security services, and pension for life.  And for at least 4 great years the 1% would be kissing your a$$ instead of robbing your old measly 401k.  And if you let them kiss it enough, they might even reward you with 4 more years of a$$ kissing.

I get your point Mr. Ager.  It's all about the power that can sway where hundreds of billions are spent and used.

On a side note.  If I had 1 billion I would be fishing right now instead of on FBO.

I think I need more details.  Is the $1B the cost of a presidential candidate's campaign?

Other than that, if I had a cool 9 figures in cash, I will buy Jokostel his guns and then hang out with Enslow for a while.

Back on topic, but $450k a year seems like an awfully small return on a one billion dollar investment of 0.045%.
