If you enjoy unemployment, don't get these degrees

Yeah, college isn't for everyone.  These majors though are in high demand right now and I am pretty sure that if you can make it through these programs the job market will still be strong for a few years.  My personal favorite is #4.

The 10 college majors with the lowest unemployment rates

College students, take note: There are at least six fields of study whose graduates are virtually 100 percent employed right now. That's right--certain majors, such as pharmacology, produce graduates who face a zero percent unemployment rate.

That's not bad considering last month's joblessness rate for people with a college degree or higher was 4.4 percent.

The Wall Street Journal created an interactive tool where users can search for the average employment rate and median income of people who studied each major. The data comes from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce, which released a similar ranking of majors in May that we wrote about here.

The Center's previous study found that graduates with engineering and science majors tend to earn significantly more many than graduates with other college majors. (A petroleum engineering major will make 300 percent more over his or her lifetime than a peer who majored in counseling psychology, for example.)

But narrowing the results down to only the employment rate yields a wider range of fields that provide excellent job security. People who majored in some lower paying fields, such as school counseling, face an almost nonexistent chance of being unempl0yed.

Check out the rest of the most employable majors, below.

Majors and their unemployment rate:

1. Actuarial Science—0 percent

2. Astronomy and Astrophysics—0 percent

3. Educational Administration and Supervision—0 percent

4. Geological and Geophysical Engineering—0 percent

5. Pharmacology—0 percent

6. School Student Counseling—0 percent

7. Agricultural Economics—1.3 percent

8. Medical Technologies Technicians—1.4 percent

9.Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology—1.6 percent

10. Environmental Engineering, Nursing, and Nuclear Industrial Radiology and Biological Technologies—2.2 percent

You definitely get a clearer picture of unemployment when you look at it by education. Like the article above states, its just above 4% for people with a bachelors or higher. No college is around 10% and no high school diploma is over 14%.

As one of my middle school teachers said to my class, in response to a kid who was dropping out and joking around about it "you guys laugh now, but you won't think its funny when your supporting this student in 10 years"

Or as your asking him to hunt pheasants or hunt deer on the land he inherited and ranches now. In all reality though nothing beats a college education nothing like coming out of school with even a 2 year degree making 60k + and having your employer pay for you to get a BS.

sweeney,

Ha ha, yeah there's a few out west that have gotten to ride the gravy train that's for sure.  Mineral rights added to it ten fold.

I'll get to inherit some (I hope...life is expensive) but it is all farm land with little hunting sanctuary.  The funny part (or not so funny part) is I wanted to come back and farm.  I miss the equipment, I miss the work, I miss it all.  But dad had the right hindsight to tell me "stay in school, there's nothing here for you."  Painful to hear and painful for him to speak but he made the right choice.  I still dream of it though.

And whoa, 60k out of college?  I started at 12 bucks an hour with my degree and a short six months ago was barely cracking 40k.  The curse of ND but now...pay is higher but so is everything else!  Things are changing.  Point is, it takes 60 to make ends meet if you come out with debt, need a vehicle and a place to stay.  On your own, you might not even make it on that!

Another thing we need to do is lower the cost of education so graduates don't pay 30% of their income for ten years after graduation.
I have a degree in Wildlife Biology, and secondary education.  I took a lot of classes that were worthless.  Why?  Because colleges tell you that you need a well rounded education.  Bull droppings.  College should be like McDonalds and when you order a Big Mac they don't make you purchase a fish sandwich also.  That's the way colleges operate and they do so because some classes are so worthless no one would take them.  That means some professors would have no job.  Tough, why should we pay for something we don't want?
You may think I am young with the attitude I have, but no I am 63 years old and retired after a 35 year + professional career.  Colleges are ripping off our youth and high school teachers are telling everyone they need to go to a University.  What we need is more trade schools.  They push college not for the sake of the student, the employers, the nation, etc but for the colleges.

If I could do it over again (suppose I still could) I would be a dentist or gone to a trade school.

If I had a crystal ball I would be in geology or other bakken engineering type career.

#4 here too, Geological Engineer
Can't complain other than I don't get near as much free time as my friends in banking or accounting or anything else really.

Just began my journey for a degree in Agribusiness (minor crop and weed science).  Its been 12 years since I graduated HS and 8 years since I went through Tech School.  The only downfall is having to take all of my math classes over again due to the absence of it in my life.  If I would have just brushed up on it once in a while, I wouldnt be paying for them again.  My fault I guess.  Now I just have to focus on getting through this in 4 years.

I just started taking college classes last year...12 years after high school. Intermediate Algebra and college Algebra were nightmares but I'm not a math guy. Going to get a Associates in Criminal Justice and a Bachelors in Natural Resources. Wish I would have started a long time ago and got it knocked out. No time like the present I guess.

As someone who started college a little late myself, congratulations and good luck!

The trick to finishing college is to never, NEVER!, NEVER!!! give up.  It took me 8 years to get my bachelors through 3 deployments and 1 divorce.  It took me another 7 years to get my PhD through another 2 depolyments, a marriage, and 2 kids.  Plenty of excuses to stop.  Don't do it.  Now I'm 42 and retired.  Granted we made some good financial decisions along the way, but keep it up through anything is the best advice I can give you guys.  Luck really doesn't apply here, so I'll say Good Studying!!

I got stuck starting out with Elementary Algebra due to a placement exam.   Almost done with Intermediate, start College Algebra next semester.  Ive been taking them all online so I don't get any help from the instructor, which makes it a little rough at times.  Im dreading the thought of having to go all the way to Calculus II...Yuck.

Kdm,

Holy, retired? I guess dani's sister is close as her military career as a major in the air force comes closer to the end and she is about your age. And yeah investments that pay quickly sure do help.

Congrats!

It sounds funny everytime I say that though.  Higher education or education of any kind for that matter will always pay dividends and will always be "worth the effort".  I'd like to wish all the students out there grinding it out, all the best!!

Too funny. You guys crack me up. Would be a great treat to meet some on here in person. Anyone going to Mobridge for the Ice Classic? Look for the guy in the mullet. Business in front; party in the back. The one with the camo stocking hat by the beer tank wearing coveralls(the orange depth finder pinned to the zipper should give it away.)  Basing my tournament on the fact that 3000 fathoms make a league; and the bite might be shallower.

One step at a time...Be careful.
