Hunting online?

So cruising bismanonline this morning looking for deals, I come across an abundance of ads looking for places to hunt, from prairie dogs to geese. Does this actually ever work for anyone? I guess any time that I have wanted a new place to hunt, I put the miles on the vehicle, found a place that looks promising, and went and talked to the land owner.

Do land owners actually call these guys and say something like "gee, I am glad I found your ad, all these dang deer/geese/prairie dogs/pheasants/whatnot have just taken over the place. No one ever stops to ask permission to hunt, so I have to seek out hunters, sure am glad I found your ad."

What ever happened to scouting and getting out there? Grabbing my dog, my county plat book, and a thermos of coffee with an extra cup has always been one of my favorite parts of hunting, finding new places to hunt, meeting land owners I haven't had the chance to meet yet and sharing a cup of coffee with them, and shooting a lot of bull.

Have any of you guys ever ran an ad looking for a place to hunt? Did it work? Personally I feel like the scouting is just as much a part of the hunt as the actual shooting, or am I wrong in today's instant gratification society?

Bismanonline is an awesome site. I am there daily and have bought and sold there regularly. As far as the hunt and scouting goes, I would think that would be a better experience experienced in reality and not vertuality. But there is a reason I don't hunt much, takes to long and takes away from being on the water. More fur ya'll.

beedogs,

How is that any different than using the internet via FBO to obtain hints of where to go or in seeking access?

While I too suspect it is a very low percentage of them who actually find free access to land on BisMan, we do know that not all landowners frequent FBO.

And for what it's worth, I have met some pretty darn nice landowners and hunting partners through FBO.

Oh i whole heartedly agree that FBO is a great place to make some good connections. It's just like hanging out at a cowboy bar if you are into rodeo or a sports bar if you are into sports. Like minded people gathering... but that's not my point. It just seems that the instant gratification mindset is creeping into everything we do in life. IMO, the harder you work for something, the more it means to you. I'm not saying we should ban the practice of looking for leads online, because i'll be the first to admit that I check the FBO fishing reports when I am planning on heading to the big lake. But I still put my time in on the water, cruising around, looking for fish, structure, baitfish, you know, scouting.

Ranchers want prairie dogs shot. A lot of people want geese shot too. But I doubt anyone goes to bisman online to find hunters.

I agree Beedoggs. This has bugged me for awhile. When did people get so lazy as to just put an ad out to hopefully get contacted by a landowner wanting them to come take care of their "burden". Doubt it works very often if at all. So if they don't get called, does that mean they don't hunt for the year?? A map and a phone can go a long way!

Allen, FBO is different in that this is a hunting/fishing website where people are here to give advice, etc., and hopefully direct someone that is new to the area/sport a place to start. Granted most don't just put a topic out looking for a landowner to call them and shoot those pesky geese, pheasants, and deer.

The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

FIO, you got that right, there are a lot of folks here to do nothing more than to give advice.
