Hunting in-state vs. out of state

This time of year through about Apr/May we usually see a few topics come up about hunting out of state.  SD, MT, WY, CO, etc and I've always wondered what compels some folks to pack up and go, and compels others to stay here and hunt at "home"?

Now I realize that for some folks it's $$, and others it's time constraints of work and family.  But, what about the rest?  Access?  Fear of the unknown?  Logistics of lodging, setting up a camp, etc?  I also realize some folks stay home because the hunting is great right here and they don't want to give up even one day driving to some far off place when they could spend that day afield right here.

I guess I can start.  I mainly hunt out of state for quarry that's less abundant, or not available here in ND.  Sometimes that means my draw odds are better elsewhere, other times it means the animal just isn't available here in ND.  In the case of say, Ruffed Grouse it's actually closer, and even with the NR liscence ultimately less expensive for me to hunt them in MN than here in ND.  MT Antelope and elk/deer draw odds are better than here at home, and there's no bear hunting to be had in ND.  Seems I always learn something abroad that I can apply at home and it often takes getting out of the "This is how we always hunt this parcel of ground" area for new ideas to come to me.

Anyway, just wondering what are the thoughts of others.

If I could afford it I would be hunting as much as I could where ever I could.  I love the ND outdoors, but there is something to be said about hunting in other states, but it comes down to time and money.

I live in Fargo and don't have access to any ND hunting land within 80 miles of my home (at least not any land where I can hang a stand).  I do have access to some sweet land by Hawley, MN (about 28 miles away).  So...I buy a MN bow license every year.  Even though the tag is expensive, it's nice to have a place I can go for a quick morning or evening bow hunt.
Just a nice red river cat.

Capitalizing on local opportunity that gets you afield more often, I like it!

I really enjoy hunting out of state.  It gives me a chance to get away and see new country and get away from the norm.  When you hunt out of state there is a lot of planning and research that goes into it.  For instance, MT and WY have no trespass laws so everything is posted and you have to make contacts to hunt.  I have met many new people and plan to do so every year.

In fact, I just returned from a MT mule deer hunt and saw my first mountain lion!!  Wow, I knew they were impressive but to finally to have actually saw one in the wild is something I won't forget!!

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

Mainly for me it would be for the opportunity.  Over the counter elk tags in CO,  five plus years for a muley tag in CO, about the same as ND.  I started throwing WY in the mix as well.  The more tags in the pocket the more chances for great memories.  I enjoy loading the truck and heading out on an adventure with good friends, the mountains are a special place in my book.

The unknown. I love going out of state especially for mule deer in particular. It is awesome not knowing what could be over the next hill or what kind of buck is through the next draw.
And just being able to draw a tag and get an "extra" buck tag.

It seems back home whitetail hunting there is always the same thing and our party pretty much knows every deer in the whole area. From sheds, trail cams and bowhunting.
It's nice just going to a new area and having miles upon miles of public land to hunt and having a very legitimate chance of shooting a large trophy.
Go big or go home

I haven't had the chance to hunt out of state... primarily because of funds, logistics and time.
Mostly the funds part... but Im working on fixing that.

I would LOVE to hit up Wyomingor Montana for an Antelope hunt or Elk....
But the crem de la crem for me would be to head to Africa and do some plains game hunting.

I guess for me it's a combination of not having already hunted all of ND, at least all that I wish to hunt and the cost of going out of state.  Too many opportunities here to take advantage of before shelling out the big bucks for a tag in Alaska, MT, or any of the other states with opportunities not afforded here.

I enjoy the thrill of seeing new areas at least as much as anyone else, yet I have only hunted something like 12 deer units in ND with a rifle.  At least one year I had tags in 3 different units.

I have friends who go elk hunting in Idaho every year and they have a blast.  I think it is the thrill of hunting new territory.  Just being in the mountains with the scenery and the excitement of the unknown.

I have never hunted out of state but plan on going bear hunting in Minnesota next year if I draw a tag.  Went antelope hunting south of Dickinson this year for the first time.  For me it is just the excitement of hunting new territory with friends and meeting new people.  It is good to broaden your horizons and learn new ways and techniques in hunting different game in different areas.

I've been an out of stater for 4 years now and can't wait to get back.  There are many hunts in ND I would like to try.  For example, a goat hunt, a Cast and Blast diver duck hunt on DL, Muleys in the west, a pembina pheasant hunt with Jiffy, and of course the elk/moose/sheep hunt that probably will not happen but I have to try anyway.  Also, the elk herd reduction hunt could be interesting.  So much to hunt and so little time......  The cost is not so much the issue as the opportunities are right there in ND.   There is lots of real estate in ND I have never seen, but would sure like the chance.

For me its to hunt animals that are in short supply here, like elk.  I try to go back to Montana to chase antelope with my son and grandkids.  Always a blast!
I have more than enough places to hunt in ND, but its always  nice to see different country.

If you only knew what you've eaten you'd never let me cook again.  I can say for certain that you can't tell the difference between bear and antelope.  (grin)

Not by me and since I started the thread I think it'll be OK.  It's not just a thread for those who leave but also those who stay.

You folks over in MN have pretty good Grouse Numbers this year.  Good enough that I've hunted them better than a dozen days and only hunted pheasents over here 2 days.  Oak ridges, that's the key this year, based on the number of this year's birds they had pretty good nesting success on the oak ridges.  I saw 5 birds picking gravel right in front of someone's home on Sunday evening, I've never seen that many grouse in one spot before and certainly never out in the wide open getting gravel, pretty neat.  I also had a Bobcat within easy shotgun shooting distance, alas it's a bit early yet and I typically don't buy MN's NR furbearers liscence.  Cat was "flushed" by the dogs and trotted by me @ 15yds in a fairly open spot in the woods.  It's unlikely I'll ever be that close to a live Bobcat again.

For me, it's about the memories and friendships made.  I can't imagine not hunting with my crew.  If my buddies wanted to hunt MN or SD, I'd make every attempt to join up with them.  For me, it's about the wild game feed, crown royal, and story telling.

I drive 140 to 160 miles.
