Howa R the Howas?

On a mentored deer hunt earlier this fall I was impressed by the Howa youth model.  Also impressed with the youth carrying it, though that's another story!

Looked at them briefly yesterday.
Available in .243 and  7mm-08, maybe 308 (I didn't check) and comes with a 20 inch barrel and two Hogue overmolded stocks, one youth sized and one adult sized, and a basic inexpensive 3 - 9 scope that seemed adequate for starter hunters.
Not available in .260 though that would be a good youth-growing-up cartridge.
Anyone had any experience with the Howas?   The youth package is pretty economical.

The howa's are a little on the heavy side but that weight helps on recoil for the younger shooters. I have several starting in the 80"s and have never had one that would not group within 1" or less. I have a youth 670 in 243 and the weight is about the same but the winchester doesn't shoot as good.
Of course Bobkat you already know the 243 is a good shoot and release because they just bounce off with very little brusing

The Howa (aka Vanguard) that my father had, had a hell of a burr in the chamber... exepended shells had the to be ejected like your life depended on it, rather than nice and slow... didnt matter what brand or brass, factory or handloads... wound our or start charges...
We didn't feel like dealing with smoothing the chamber walls on a sub 500 dolar gun, so we got rid of the thing... velocites were what youd expect out of a 243 win for that barrel length (22in).... and the rifle grouped on average an inch and a quarter to 1moa.
Nothing stellar... but nobody said a plain old hunting weapon was supposed to be :)

I'm the devil's son..... call me young gun.

My wife uses a youth Howa 7mm-08 and it is an awesome gun.  I would recommend this caliber because it has hardly any kick and has great knockdown power.  You won't be disappointed.

I have the Howa in .243. It feels good and even with the youth stock is not uncomfortably short. 2 deer fell to it during the youth season. Maybe a coyote at some time  Never bounced off one. I did like the two stock deal but probably won't swap out to the other one until the kids get older. I never had any problems like mentioned above with the action. I do like the 3 position safety and being able to have it on safe while unloading. The weight was not too heavy for a 12 yr old to lug around all day but heavy enough that both said they did not notice it kick. If you want to try it out sometime Bob, give me a call. Maybe we can harass some coyotes this winter or prairie dogs this spring/summer with it.
Still waiting on the seated binoc pic.

Tough to whoop that package outta the gate.  I had one in 7-08 and it was about 30FPS slower than my 22" 7-08, no practical differece.  Accuracy, feeding, and functioning are very good.  They are a bit heavy but that's maybe the only thing not to like about them.

Bob,

My 25-06 is the Smith and Wesson stamped version of the Howa model 1500.  I have no complaints with it.  Back when I really tried to see how close I could get  grouping with my rifles it would regularly be in that 1-1.5" range with factory loads.  Seems to be a little tighter with my hand loads.

What is your opinion of the "rubber like" stock?    I've never handled one in the field just in the store.   I keep thinking the rubber grippy stock may kind of stick or snag to clothing etc.
Maybe I'm wrong.

Had one.  Didn't care for it myself. It wasn't so much the exterior texture I didn't like.  I much prefer a hand laid fiberglass stock to injection molded plastic.

The rubber Hogue stock is awesome.  It doesnt sweat in the heat and doesnt get hard in the cold weather.

I've had a couple of Hogue rubberized stocks on rifles and personally love em!  Still have one on a 10 -22.    Seems people either love em or hate em!
Thanks for all the comments.
