Are there enough of us fly fishing folk in the Grand Forks area to get some sort of club or fly swap going? Let  me here your thoughts.

Love to Fly Fish, but I put that bad boy away when I moved here from Washington. I guess the only species I fished for was Trout and the only place, (that I know of) to catch trout around here is TRSP, and thats only for about two- three weeks after they put the fish in. What do you fish for with flys around here? My gear is only set up for shallow stream fishin.

A club is a good idea, it would just be hard for me to dodge the fish in the Red with my baitcaster/spinning reel to do something different on any of my days of this summer!

Good to hear of some intrest in the GF area.

Unfortunetly there are a ton of Fly Fishers that share the misinformed view that was expressed above.

Not only does ND offer PLENTY of opportunities for trout (big trout) on the fly rod, but I have yet to find a walleye that has said
"hey wait a minute that guys using a fly rod i'm not being caught on that!"
And i have watched with a bit of guilt as people have sat watching a bobber for hours while i cast hook and land and release dozens upon dozens of fiesty bluegills.

As far as opportunity around GF, wow, DL Pike on the fly rod, people travel half way around the world to chase pike on the fly rod and DL goes nearly unmentioned, a guy could make a killing guiding for pike on the fly rod on DL,
white bass, crappie, bluegill wow the options are endless, not to mention the folks who chase, catch and LAND catfish on the fly rods, check out the Manitoba fly fishers site for info on that.

ND has two quality Fly Fishing clubs and could deffinetly use more!
the Dakota Fly Fishers in Minot and the Missouri Valley Fly Fishers of Bismarck (www.mvffclub.com)

One of the best ways to gather interested parties would be to hold a seminar or event,
A big misconception is that Fly fishing must be done in rivers in mountains so why not set up a seminar bgring in any one of the WORLD CLASS stillwater Fly fisherman to speak or teach.

IF you have interest in taking this further PM me or email me and we can discuss some ideas further

I think your right with the common misconception, I guess we never took advantage of that when the streams and rivers were abundant and full of trout.

This kinda sounds fun. I think I need to start doing some research and clean some dust off the rod case!
Thanks for the motivation and nice fish

Another fun one is carp.  Talk about a first run into your backing.
Basicaly anything can be caught on the fly.  We can make combinations of fur and feathers to imitate anything from a mayfly to a fathead, a crayfish, pearch, even a kernal of corn.  The most fun I have found are either pike or white bass on DL.  Carp on the red lake would be right up there.  Or smallies in the BWCA, or gills at brewer. The list goes on and on. The closest to home would be the red river.  I've got into many a goldeye, a couple small cats one walleye a few sauger, pike and a coouple smallies right in town by either of the dams.  I usually pack a fly rod (or four) whenever i go fishing.   If the oppurtunity arises to get anything on the fly, I'm rigged and ready.
Every year while Ice fishing in late Feb., I get that welcomed itch to start tying and dreaming up new patterns and just wating for the chance to throw some feathers.  I was out just last week casting in a drainage ditch with a new 5wt I picked up this winter.  Call me crazy, or just normal.

I think a club would be a lot of fun.  Could exchange ideas, plan trips, make some friends, and well, fish.

I am a very beginner fly fisher. I have bought my equipment for cheap last year and am very much still learning. I think a fly club would be a great help to me and people like me.

I have been meaning to try and get into the sport but lack of knowledge and such has detered me. If there was a club or something of the like I would definetely take part in it.

If anything has come of any of this, I'd like to join in.

I am a beginner as well and I've been looking for a club, but nothing is close to home.

I flyfish on Devils for most of the spring/summer. I use it whenever possible. I target 20lb+ pike but LOVE to get into a school of white bass with it as well. I started with an 8 wt a couple years ago and managed to land a 40 incher on it. But it is not enough rod to cast most of my streamers so i switched over to a temple fork 10 wt.  You can have an absolute blast pike fishing with flyrods id be happy to take anybody out for a day. Had 3 people flyfishiing from my boat at the same time last year in a calm day sightfishing big pike. It can get to be a mess sometimes with all that line flyin around!
