How important is your vote? Do you sometimes feel it doesn't matter?

Since I was old enough I have voted  in every election I was eligable to vote in.

It's not the "vote" that's the problem.  The problem is the choice of candidates.  Two groups, one way off to the right and one way off to the left, TELL us who we get to vote for.  At the national level we never get to vote for someone who cares about insuring funding for the down and out (and paying for it) while also realizing we need to make sure individuals are rewarded for their hard work.  We never get to pick a candidate who realizes we need to regulate the richest or most powerful to insure they don't steal the average Joe blind while also making sure the regs don't go too overboard and stifle investment and creativity.  Instead we have to vote for people that a small minority pick for us every 4 years.  And the worse part is this small minority rarely (if ever) lets these candidates they pick find the middle ground that's really needed and wanted by the majority of Americans.  Their "it's our way or the highway" and "your either with us or against us" attitudes continue to destroy this great country and impede the long term planning that's needed to get a handle on our debt and the direction of our future.

It's important enough for me to vote in every state wide election since 1984.

Everyone wanted someone in the middle and that's what was available last election but people decided to vote for Obama and the electorals followed.

So I don't understand the "middle" arguement.  It was available last time...

For the presidential election, ND votes don't mean anything.

I grew up in a stsate that was about the same, but your state and fed reps elections sometimes are just as important.   New laws on the ballet are very important, and it is very, very, important to find out who and why are behind a new law that is to be voted on.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out who is pitching and who is catching!!

I know deep down my vote is important and should be treated as such, however, recently I've started feeling like the people who we all vote for (left or right) are not the same people once elected.  It's the typical "say whatever necessary to get elected" and then act differently once in office.  It pisses me off, but less and less each year because I've just come to expect it.  So, it seems like my vote for the people on the ballot doesn't mean much anymore, but my vote for certain measures (whether local or federal) is VERY important.

I truly believe if they did away with the electoral college and went with popular vote in the presidential election, you may see a big difference.

There is going to be at least one VERY important measure coming up for vote that will protect farmers and livestocK rasiers from outside groups such as HSUS,PETA,and other nut job groups.

Voting is important, IMHO.  There probably is NEVER an excuse for not voting.

I wish we had a second type of vote, though.  One that would not be binding and that could be easily done via the internet. One to try to take the pulse of the electorate, no matter what party they belong to.
For example, looking at the Rep candidates, all of them except maybe one, have pretty good ideas.   By voting for one guy and not the next, the second guy's good ideas often don't see the light of day, or at least are less likely to.
So why not develop some kind of way for everyoone to vote on some kind of a menu of suggestions.   Newt has some good ideas, so does Romney, Perry, Ron Paul some darned good ones, even Santorum had one believe it or not.
Wish there was a way to list their suggestions on various topics for some kind of a mass online vote to help guide the winner in his/her decisions.  At least the winner would know what the majority of the electorate felt on different issues.
For example I'd Like Newt's numbers 2, 6 and 8, Romny's numbers 2 and 8 with #5 deserving some thought, Paul's 2, 8, 5 and so on......

You might, but then we wouldn't be a democratic REPUBLIC any longer.

Hell, I am starting to lean towards going back to having the senators chosen by the state as opposed to being elected by the people.

The U.S. Senate was NOT intended to be full of people there "representing their constituents", that mission was originally supposed to be reserved for the House of Representatives.  When it comes right down to it, we now have two House of Representatives and that means the good of the country is left behind in favor of special interest groups.

Yeah, that means we would've had Gore instead of Bush. I wonder how that would've turned out.

Our 3 electoral votes back then would not have made a difference in getting Gore elected.  The majority of the people in this state ( I think ) are conservative republicans and would of voted for Bush anyways.

yeah, ND will pretty much always be conservative. I was just saying that if the POUS was elected by the popular vote rather than the electoral, Gore would've won the presidency back in 2000, since over a half million more people voted for Gore than Bush.

that is exactly what's going on.  It's become "who can bring home the most port" contest.  If they would just do what's best for the country as a whole the rest would take care if itself
