Oil field material in Minot tested to be safe

MINOT, N.D. - State officials say bags of hydraulic fracturing sand stored at a downtown Minot site do not pose a health risk to the public.

The sand is used in the recovery of oil from shale rock. The state Health Department tested the Minot material in the wake of municipal landfills in western North Dakota rejecting some oil field waste because of elevated radiation levels.

Health Department program manager Dan Harman said the level of radioactivity in the Minot tests was far below what most people encounter in nature on a daily basis. He says radioactive readings were so low they could not be measured by standard Geiger counters, and more specialized equipment had to be used

no problem let the sand sit there   I think it was a big issue because the Williston landfil tested positive but who knows if the Williston geiger counter was caliberated  Minot passed in different tests.  Good for that company who owns the sand bag  kudos to them

In reading the comments, at least one poster seems to be on the right track.  There is no reason to be testing quartz sand for radiation.  The radioactivity comes from the shale itself, or more like the radioactive elements in it and are brought out of the hole with the excess frac sand.  There used to be an old pipe descaling operation on the north edge of Williston back in the late 80s.  That place was eventually given up for back taxes because it was an environmental nightmare, buried (leaking???) storage tanks of ????, fairly high in radiation piles of dirt (removed scale from pipe)...relatively anyways.  Never did hear what became of it but after poking around it a bit it seemed like the city's asking price of $1 was a little too high.  Ok, they may have wanted $1500 or something like that, it was a number of years ago and the point is they inherited a problem.

The issue was that the Williston landfill refused to allow disposal of some filters if I remember right.  Must be filters that are used to strip out the sand and other fines before the frac fluid is disposed of in an injection well.

Allen this is way above my head but if the radiation is in the shale itself, what kind of danger is it to humans?

Not actually that much unless you were to work with it on a regular basis. Some formations are notably hotter than others.

I would certainly encourage anyone worried about the levels of radiation common in our shales to immediately get their homes checked for radon. Radon is one of the side effects (decay products) of the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium, if I remember correctly. Much of our soils and the glacial till around ND is really just ground up shale and as a result we have really high naturally occurring radiation and as the uranium decays it gives off radon gas. It can be really hit or miss though depending on many things, enough so that it is impossible for anyone to accurately predict if it is in your basement or not.

The radon gas in poorly ventilated homes is likely to be a bigger concern than the shales at a work site.

I have always been surprised that nd doesn't require radon testing of homes.

P.s. not only "work with it" but to do so on a concentration process. Like whatever those filters were.

Tim, Canadians?

They probably aren't dumb enough to test quartz sand.

Aren't they mining shale to get their oil?

Yes, yes they are. I don't know anything about the formation they are going after though. Some are much higher than others, probably a function of the dominant species of dead stuff in the shale. But in general this is likely a bridge they have had to cross as well.

The canadiens are mining oil sands, not even closely related to the bakken, which is only a shale in the upper and lower and a dolomite in the targetted middle bakken.  Shale has become a generic trem that is thrown around willy nilly.

Wormwiggler is correct, I stand corrected in that the Canadians are mining sands. I should have remembered that as it isn't like I haven't heard it before.

No doubt. average rent in the west for a 2 bedroom is $1,700. On the east side of the state its $750.

I would hate to be renting in the town I live in, reguardless of how high my income was. I think you can rent downtown New York apts for less.
