Has anyone ever seen this before?  Or tried it?  I'm not even sure if it is legal here in ND or not?

Just saw an episode of Midwest Outdoors the other day where the inventor of this tip up was fishing for coho salmon in wisconsin.  According to the show these fish are hard to catch on a regular tip up but they seemed to be catching a few with the hook set, would like to give one a try around here.

For $50 the thing should reel them up the hole and fillet em too! LOL!

Come on, does a big spring cost an extra $30??? Same basic design as the HT Polar except with the spring mechanism.

The website states it is illegal in Minnesota and Ontario.
Doesn't mention ND.

I think this was brought up last year also.  I  can't remember for sure, but i think since it sets the hook mechanical that it was illegal in ND as well.

I think this is very similar to the automatic fisherman.  I was going to buy the automatic fisherman but because MN just passed a new law about spring hook setting the company has gone out of business.  I do not know the status of the hook set tip up but I would hate to spend $50 and then not be able to get parts if something breaks or even return it.

I liked the look of those devices that use a bent rod to set the hook, would be very handy for pike through the ice IMO. Those the ones that went out of business?

Are you talking about the slammer tip-ups: http://www.slammertipup.com

You could make something like those pretty easily too.

I have one of these. It's legal in North Dakota, or at least it is according to the guy at scheels. I used mine last year, and it worked well. Set up a lot a light biting eyes. I may have to add more to my collection. If they would just make an insulated one......

Justed checked the fish guide on line Page 5;

It is illegal to fish with any spring, lever, chemically, electrically or mechanically actuated fish hook or gaff hook at all times.  The use of any mechanical divice to automatically retrive the fish is also illegal.

Looks to me you can't use it in ND!!

I agree that they are illegal and rightfully so.  At least you can run to the tip-up and set the hook yourself....

They are legal in ND!

These are tip-ups, not hooks! And they do not retrieve the fish!

I got one last year and they are legal in ND but not Min. Biggest waste of $40 I ever spent. Dont know what I am doing wrong but cant get a fish to set the thing off. Last year @ DL I had a northern on and it never set the flag. Fish was trying to pull it down the hole. Cant get it to work.

do you have your line wrapped around it the right way, it looks to me like you can only wrap your line in one direction.

I do own two of these, and they work fine.  I prefer using them when fishing with large bait, such as smelt. It has three different settings, to which how much pressure it sets the hook at so you dont rip the lips on the smaller fish. Boy does the bottom settting have some kick.   I have had very few times where the thing has been set off and not had a fish at the end.  I do recommend buying the hole saver lift for it.  On the really cold windy days that spring can get iced up and not function right with out it, plus it keeps the hole clear for u.  I also reccomend the reel/jaw opener, it makes it easier to reel the line in and helps with them pesky northern jaws.  I have caught lots of northerns on it, up to 22 lbs and they function great.  Just make sure you wind the line the right way.  LOL right buddy!!!!
Here fishy fishy!!

Looks pretty sweet, except for the price, son of a.....a guy could have $70 dropped down on ONE if he wanted to throw a Frabill Artic Siren on it and have the hole cover and line winder. I like it alot, and I love tipups for some reason. I might have to put it on my Christmas wish list.
