That guy passed up half a dozen legit 200+ inchers, typical and non typical. A few of them would probably have beaten our ND state recent typical record of 203. Insane, insane insane!    Anyone know how long it takes to draw a tag in that area of Utah? 10-15 years?

I think he shot a lesser grossing deer than he passed on but it was clear he was criteria hunting versus 100 percent trophy hunting. Very wicked framed deer!

It is easy to pass deer when you have the confidence another is not impossible to find. Those Mossback guys work hard.

Me and the Henries could get along well!

No doubt. In all honesty, their prices werent THAT bad compared to other outfitters ive seen.... $6500 for the guide for the 5-7 days (+ that of the tag if drawn) . 2 guides for $11000.  Do you apply for Utah at all Tim? Some people I've talked to said it could be up to 20+ years until a non res pulls a tag in those awesome units.

You can just buy the tag.

I saw that also, but it must be an auction type tag? Doesnt really list any prices ..... I would be scared to say what some of those auction tags go for....

Sorry guys but unless you've been in the game at least 10-15 years earnig pref points or get extremely lucky in the random you will never draw that tag. The longer I stay in the UT pref point game "13 years" the less I like it to tell you the truth. And when you start getting close to drawing "the bow tags in my case"  the state goes and starts messing with the managment practices.  But there is that chance of drawing a random tag, you just never know. Heres a little something to put it into perspective.

And now The Henry Mountains….Yeah, you can shoot a 190-200 inch mule deer here on public land. Just like the Paunsaugunt, it’s an awesome area, where hunters kill barely 5% of the available bucks, the sex ratio is an astounding 68 bucks per 100 does, and the success rate is about 100%. The Paunsaugunt has a lot more deer on it, but there may be better deer in the Henries, and the average age of a harvested buck is slightly higher. But what’s it gonna take to get that dang license? Well, it’s 10 times tougher to draw than the Paunsaugunt. Last year, your random odds were 1 in 1372 for the rifle license, but a guy with just two points drew the random license, and the lone 17 point applicant got the other tag. 14 people had 16 points, 15 had 15 points, 21 had 14 points, and 31 had 13 points. Basically, it will be 50 years before you catch those top point holders or they die or quit hunting. You’re going to have to bank on drawing the license randomly if you’re just getting started, but your odds are 10 times better in the Paunsaugunt for a similar caliber of deer.

Yeah I am not talking Henry for me.  I don't remember where I wanted to hunt but when started out on this adventure I think it was around 10 points.  I should maybe get myself organized again!

The Henrys are producing some great bucks right now, but its all because of the low hunting pressure. For many years none of us would hunt the Henrys because there wasn't any deer there. The FG closed it for many years. Yeah its hard to draw, but what a dream.

Same story with the Paunsaugunt it was closed for a number of years then reopened to trophy hunting. ANY limited entry in Utah is going to have great hunting, little pressure and mature bucks. Anyone of those areas could and has produced some hogs.

Probably the best unit in historical terms would be the Book Cliffs. I hunted the Book Cliffs for 15 years. If we didn't see 75 bucks a day we would move camp. You can't believe the hogs we chased there mostly with a bow. I would imagine give what I know about the genetics that would be an awesome tag to have. I think its a 1 in 32 for a NR rifle.

 Pretty good elk tag also.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFiml4kkR-0

The West Desert Vernon unt has produced some big bucks in the past also. Its a 1-18 draw.

I have been getting some bonus points too. But we have been getting some points for the general deer season and plan to hunt it next year. I am going back to southern Utah and hunt the sons of this bucks.

We also chased this buck around there from many years, but we just couldn't kill him. That's Fred Morris in the pic and those are sheds he mounted. This buck was one of the Magnnificent Seven. He died of old age and should have passed his genes on many times.

So don't counted a general buck in southern utah out either especially now that the state has limited the tags and broke into small units.

Anyone wanting any info about Utah PM I grew up there and hunt most of the state hard.

I have never been on this web site or plan to get on it again but i just read what BDOG just said to try and make himself look cool. The buck he posted on the bottom of his post is the buck of jutice. This buck was NEVER seen alive. ALL of his sheds were found after the buck had died. So stop trying to make yourself look cool!!!! I guarantee you do not know where that buck was found!!!

BDOG my email is lundell_hunting_7@hotmail.com if you wanna talk.
