common snipe make a whoo whoo whoo sound with their wings ...often you will hear them before you see them

That could be it but I don't remember the white-ish belly on the ones I've seen in the field.   I'll take a closer look with the field glasses tomorrow.

It is the Common Snipe, This troubled me for days years ago trying to figure out what bird it was. I did a lot of looking and found out that it was the Common snipe. Here is a link that has an audio clip, listen to it all the way to the end and that's the sound your hearing.

Since this is a subject about bird ID, how do I find what kind of bird makes a certain sound?  I've heard these birds all my life but I've never seen the bird that makes the sound.  Maybe haven't looked hard enough.  I hear them now in Bismarck, especially in the morning.  They aren't robins or doves.  They make two distinct sounds that sound like a whistle.  The first is a higher pitch than the second.  Kind of sounds like the first two notes on Beethoven's 5th.
