I went half way up, but started thinking the double seat was looking small with almost no support to grab onto & starting breathing hard & panicking, I had to come down.  I let myself & my partner down.  I think I may try again, but my question is:

Does anyone hv advice on how to get over that feeling as ur going up & it panicks me to think of turning around & sitting still while the other person comes up & the whole thing will be moving?  uhg...

If you you can get over the fear of actually getting up to the stand, harness yourself in right away.  That will give you a sense of security knowing that if something catastrophically fails you will still be ok.  You will be hanging 24 ft. in the air, but remember falling doesn't hurt hitting the ground does.  When I was younger it kind of bothered me being up that high but the harness does make you feel secure.

I was well over 30 feet in my uncle's stand (mainly because of a steep hill) and I didn't like it either.  The first sit I brought a ratchet strap along to secure myself since I didn't have a harness.  The 2nd sit I brought a harness that I borrowed.  It was much better after the second sit and you get use to it after a bit.  Its nerve racking either way.  Most stands I hang don't go about 20 feet.

Might help to remember that the stands are safe enough that thousands of other folks are also climbing into one just like it every day for the next 2-3mo.

I worked with a guy that fell asleep and fell out of his stand 12 feet high. He said it was bad just like a dream but when he woke up he hit the ground. broken arm and very cut up on his face. not good. they do sell retractable lanyards that are slick  so you would be strapped the whole time.

If you are scared to go up.... do go.  I am always nervous when I climb... not a big fan of heights but once you sit down and have a safety strap on... I am good.  They also make safety climbing gear as well.  Good luck.
Or I could say what my dad would say to me... Jesus... quit being a little girl and get you butt in the stand.... see if that works to.

PLG,
Like Mad Dog said, they make Safety Climbing gear, it is kind of a pain in the A$$ to use, especially if there alot of branches on your tree, but you will feel alot safer climbing. Also, Dont carry anything with when you climb leave your equipment on the ground, just climb the tree... and when you get to your stand and lock in, hoist all of your stuff up. Don't be afraid of heights just respect them.

I second the e-bay idea and the harness; eventually after using the climbing harness it will become a hassel and you wont need it anymore, just remember tie off when u get up.

Go with ground blind hunting instead. The more nervous you are, the more likely you are to make a mistake that will forever effect both you and your family. Hunt hard having provided for safety first (modified firefighter rule.)

Just don't fall out.  I fell out of one before.  Well I never fell out of it; it just buckled and we went crashing to the ground.  Luck we did not break anything but it hurt like hell.  Guys at work printed a tee shirt up of a guy falling out of a stand and gave it to me because that was the second time that year for falling out of a stand.  It was our fault.  The strap that held the ladder to the middle of the tree was in bad shape and broke.  Ladder bowed out and down we came.  Wow brutal memories.  I know this does not help the situation but just make sure everything is secure then you will be alright.  Wear your fall protection.

Do not look down and just go one step at a time until you feel right going up another step.  It is no different than going up a ladder except a lot safer. I used to get nervious on a 6 foot ladder then conquered that and went to a 12 foot  and now I go up a 20 foot but I will need it strapped to something.

take a few shots before you climb up. that will calm your nerves. lol.

I like to put a rachet strap around my stands. That makes them feel a lot more solid. I don't hunt out of ladder stands but it should work just as well.
