OK, so when clicking on a link to a thread this morning FBO downloaded something onto my PC.  And when I had to hard shut down the puter, when it restarted I got something I had never seen before called HDD Plus trying to tell me to "scan" and "fix" my hard drive.

WTF Tim?

You need to reign in your frigging advertisers again.

Folks,

We are aware of the issue.  Sometime yesterday during the early morning hours a hack got into the system and exploited an issue in the server.  They did some scripting with the banners.  The situation was addressed and killed.

However, the hack obviously is persistent and skilled.  It happened again around the same time this morning.  Some sort of back door was used to access the server again.  The compromise has been cleaned up and this time we are not taking the hack lightly and doing extended research to see how the clever back door scripts are working and hiding.

We apologize for any inconvenience and want to assure you the TON staff is adamant in thwarting this hack.

Thank you,

Tim

There are lots of instructions available on how to remove this. Also lots of tools that will remove it.  You could try MalwareBytes free download. download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Yesterday AVG was reporting viruses on this site for me. I decided to stay away. Later in the day it was ok.

Malware is a good program.

Another program worth a look is Combofix found at bleepingcomputer.com.

I am not telling you to use this.  Just saying it has worked for me in the past.  You must take responsibility for your own decisions in what programs to trust in addressing software and hardware issues with your own computer.

Again, the situation is under control right now and we are researching permanent locks on this style of hack.

AVG, VIPRE and Microsoft Security Essentials are very good and cheap computer protection software.

I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials because it is free and also puts much less of a strain on your computer's performance.  It has been very good so far.

But again, it is up to you to do your own research and decision making.

Fortunately I  have not had to use MalewareBytes. A friend of mine has used it in the past to fix malware on several computers.  I guess you have to use it at your own risk as Tim said. However it is a CNET recommended download which is a good thing. Updating your current virus software and scanning your system is always a good idea.

I am using AVG on one computer and Microsoft Security Essentials on the other. Both are free and have been working well for me.

I picked up HDD plus from here yesterday morning, I used MalwareBytes first but it didn't get the whole infection, a few hours later it was coming back up.  I used combofix to completely remove it.  If your AV software has been coming up telling you about infected files it's probably a good idea to run a scan with MalwareBytes.  If it finds stuff, I would then run combofix.

This HDD Plus is coming in from a lot of different websites, not just this one.  I work in Jamestown as a PC Tech and since yesterday we've had 3 machines come in with this problem, you'll know you have it if you start getting messages in the lower right hand corner of your screen telling you that there is a problem with your hard drive or that you have no memory.

So this is where I got my problems from.....

My laptop is currently at a repair shop because of a suspected hard drive crash yesterday morning. I was getting the same HDD crap along with many other hard drive errors yesterday morning. The computer wouldn't even function. All it wanted to do was restart itself.

Luckily for me MalwareBytes did not find any problems on my drive. Bleeping computer is now one of my favorite sites. Thanks for the tip. I used to keep up with this virus removal stuff, as my kids were always downloading trouble.

Walleye put me on combofix.  I have been at bleeping before.  They offer nice help for the "do it yourselfers."

I work in the computer field and from experience, the pay anti-malware/spyware/virus programs many times don't catch the issue.  I highly recommend Superantispyware.

Go to Superantispyware.com and download the Free Version.  I use it whenever I have a pesky problem that I just can't fix.  9 times out of 10 it will fix your 'puter.

Without a doubt, coming out into nature is one of the neatest things there is to do, but you also have to be careful. That’s why I always try to pack the heat — try to pack a gun. Just a little bit — pack some heat. Now this isn’t too — this isn’t much of a big boy, I don’t want to kill the animal, but I do want to warn it, and say “hey, I think you’re pretty neat, but I respect your distance.” There’s bears out here, there’s mountain cougars, and biting goats.
