Hazel Hedge

Yesterday I picked my hazel nuts from the bushes. Got about six gallons of unhusked nuts which would make about a pint in the shell. I think these would make a good hedge in wildlife plantings as they sucker like crazy once they establish and they'd provide a good mast crop. I have 2 varieties, beaked (wild ones from MN) and a domestic that was purchased from a nursery. It may have been Badgerset in MN, but can't say for sure. This one is about twice the nut size of the beaked and about 7-8' tall whereas the beaked is about 4'. They seem tough enough for this area if you keep the ground worked up around them for the first 3 years or so. Snow doesn't break them down either.

Yes Dick hazel nut bush are very hardy..

Dick I know you are a man who want's people to refure to as a man who does what he says he will do right??

On May 30th 2008 you were asked this question
...............................................................................................................................................

Sorry for the slow answer, just getting ready to spray wheat and finish bean seeding.

"Dick, Does "big game species" includes farmed elk and privately owned deer and if so please show us how? You have never answered this.""

Yes it does and no I'm not going to tell how at this time. On a side note if folks read their latest issue of Dakota Country, the editor Bill Mitzell has endorsed the Fair Chase Measure and urged passage. (page 77 June issue) Ted Kerasote of Outdoor Life has endorsed the measure. Jim Poswitz of Orion too. And I think Tony Dean of Dakota Backroads has done the same or will.

NO sir when you make a big bold statement like this..............  "Dick, Does "big game species" includes farmed elk and privately owned deer and if so please show us how? You have never answered this.""

You should have some hazel nuts in your pants and answer it,over a year later unless of coarse it isn't true.   Maybe there wasn't 6 gallon of hazels nuts either.

Is Mr. Monson allowed to post in any FBO topic anymore without one of you jumping down his throat on this HF issue?  If he choses to ignore your PM's and does not reply to topics directly related to this issue, quit stalking him.

It seems as if some of you are only happy participating in these pissing matches that go absolutely nowhere online.

I think there should be a rule about posting on topic. If you don't post on topic, it's deleted, and you are put on probation. 3 strikes your banned kind of deal. Would make for a much better site. Fighting online is like racing in the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded.

Yea , Heck with all the garbage, lets talk about Hazelnuts.     I checked a few weeks ago but wild ones were few and far between in the hills. I have never roasted or smoked them,  They sound tasty though.  Do you soak them in salt water first ?

Now that is funny.  Sounds like a line Jiffy would come up with.

The domestic variety nut size is comparable to an acorn. The beaked are smaller. I just ate them raw, hadn't tried roasting or soaking them. I believe the ones in the Turtle Mnts. are beaked. The shell is thicker than an acorn so there is less nut meat. Hazels flower in the fall with a catkin that fertilizes in the spring. Deer trim off those catkins, must be tasty. The nuts are in husk that wraps around like a clam shell.

I can water water mine with a fire nozzle on the water trailer so moisture isn't a problem in the growing season. An old fellow told me there used to be hazel bushes around Kathryn and another old boy said there are still bushes below Cooperstown near the Sheyenne. Sullys Hill also has beaked but the squirrels and chipmunks clean them up early in the year. A lady from MN said when she was kid they picked them in gunny sacks and then spread the unhusked nuts across the tin roof of the barn lean to dry. Then thrashed them out with a stick. The N.A. called hazel "pecin" (sp) and they were a food source back then.

If you pick a quantity in the husk they will mold so they need to be dried or husked fairly soon. The last time I germed them I didn't do that and the % of germ was very low. The rooting compound mentioned in another thread might be a way to start some from the original bushes. The suckers also transplant easily.

Dick that is intersting, easy to grow and spread. Here is an interesting site on how to perpare Hazels nuts.    http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/html/fs/fs146/

Do you have more of this imformation stored in the archives of the North Dakota Outdoor Heritage Coalition on the different types of cover bushes?    Do you have a know the webb site for the North Dakota Outdoor Heritage Coalition, I see you share the same Postal address with them.  as this is all I can find.  Gorwing habitat is improtant.

A cople of years ago i beat the chipmunks and squirrels to the hazelnuts. I spread them out on a couple of benches in a old wood shop in my yard to dry the husks. I went back a week later and not a nut left. chipmunks got in there and hulled all of them and packed every drawer with the hulls. I havent picked them since.

I dont know the deal between dick and mauser. but i see at least dick list his location and mauser lists the uk???

Ha ha  Riverview you gotta be smarter than the chipmunks,  I just sit and drink beer and watch the critters round up the nuts.  Then when they have them all picked I cut down the tree and fill my buckets.    Sorry I couldn't resist, .  And No ,, PETA  I wouldn't that to the squirrels.  But I do want to try  roasting hazelnuts this fall with my Jerky
