Just was trying to get some input from you more experienced river anglers out there! Wondering if you guys focus on fishing below or above the small coffer dams on the river or dosnt it much matter? Focus on sharp breaks or long sand bar flats? Bait presentations? Any input would be much appreciated!

Well ever sence we had the flood in the Minot area we caught a ton of nice walleyes that got flushed down stream from lake darling. Not near the body of water you boys get to fish out east but i know the fish are here. Ice conditions have now improved with this latest cold snap, so im going to be hitting it hard soon. So to answer your question the river is the "mouse"

Oh ok, gotchya. I'm going to stay outta this one but multi-species-angler would be my number one choice if I wanted to pick a "guide" for ice fishing the Mouse.

I havn't ice fished it yet, but I've been doing well in minot in the open water with jigs & minnows below the coffer dams up until a couple weeks ago.  as a rule I usually fish below the dams since most fish swim upstream, however I have seen above a dam be just as good.

Ya we did great while the river was open both above and below the dams from Darling all the way to Sawyer. Thanks for your input! Just not very educated on river ice fishing!

Around Towner-Upham area local anglers are having good fishing on the Mouse,by springs or the inside curves of river bends. There was a problem with current for awhile,i tried some old river bends that got flooded, but are no longer part of the river.Caught some real small pike, with over six months of flooded fields-due to rainthere should be fish up and down the mighty Mouse

I've been having good luck on the Mouse through the ice... fishing 9-13ft and seemed to catch more fish right on river bends. I've been fishing after the coffer dams a couple hundred yards.. bigger fish seem to be coming on plain hooks and minnow.

Downstream from coffers or any dams is usually my choice due to fish/bait stoppage, more oxygen and wryled water, and deep holes-side currents-back flows.  Red river, Missouri, Tongue, Turtle, Sweetbriar etc. as examples.  Fish magnets!

Thanks josh (with a happier tone than Murdock)

I might fish the mouse in Minot for the first time this year since its gonna be windy on saturday and sakakawea aint no fun in a "pop-up-tent" style ice house when its windy.
the red areas on the map below at the treatment plant is usually where I get most of my walleyes from in the open water, so I'd assume they hang in the same spots when theres ice over their heads.  Bring an ice bar and test thickness first that water has been moving all year and can wear that ice pretty thin in spots.  I'd try some plain hook & minnow tip-ups scattered around an area to home in on the feeding fish while jiggin with a buckshot & a vex changing holes every few minutes I don't get a bite.

Thanks! I have drove by there all week and there have been people scattered all over. Tonight there was atleast 10 people on the east side of the bridge. I'm thinking about getting away from the crowd and maybe trying over by the country club. I would have to believe if there's active fish they couldn't resist a 5 inch creek chub swimming in front of there face!

where'd you get the creek chubs?  buy or catch your own?  Lots of creeks around minot are filled with them, I've never used them in the winter.  If theres lots of people by the treatment plant this time of year then there are definetely fish biting.

I catch my own too.  it's no secret since they are literally in every creek within 10 miles of minot.  A friend of mine owns about a thousand acres a few miles east of minot and 2 of these creeks wind through his land and flow most of the year.  the creek system south of walmart and south of the truck stop are full of them too.

Yes, they do work great...a little too great.  don't let a big creek chub fool you, for every 40" pike I have caught on a 10" creek chub I had to weed through 20 12-16" walleyes, 50 hammerhandle pike, and a dozen other fish including channel cats, smallmouth bass, trout, ling, sauger, etc.  something about a live creek chub swimming in a panic hooked thru the back under a bobber that gets anything to bite.  I also thought I would catch nothing but giant pike on my new found giant bait...boy was I wrong.  I don't know how many times I have reeled in a 13" walleye with its lips wrapped around a 10" chub, not even hooked, just clamped on like a bulldog on a rubber bone.

Thanks bowhunter, but remember, the key to looking like an epic angler is to know how to use photoshop, or master the art of the "Ahab thrust".
