Looking at getting the girlfriend a handgun in the upcoming months, and both of us are going to be taking a concealed weapons course. What would be some good suggestions for her? Was thinking along the lines of a S & W revolver in a .38/.357 Models 637, 60, or 686 with the 2 inch barrel, upto the 3 inch. Any suggestions from any of you guys that have guns for your wives/gfs and what they have would be appreciated. Thanks

While I don't carry a wheel gun, I did buy the Ruger LCR for my wife, .38.  I think the revolver has a place for people who may not get real acquainted with there firearm. Revolver is point and shoot, nothing else. A semi auto jamming would be the end if my wife was in a situation where she was depending on the firearm. You have to be very familiar to clear a semi auto quickly.

i wouldnt underestimate a ladys capability to carry a similar weapon to what you choose to carry. if i were to give my wife a gun it would be along the lines of a sub compact xd 9 or maybe 40 whatever she were to feel more confident with.

Taurus .380. Small frame, fits easily in a purse. Plus it's pink so Kelly will love it. Thinking about getting the wife one.

They do come in black as well.

You are right, I based my decision on knowing my wife. She may put 50 rounds per year down range, I put thousands.

I would go with black,The pink one doesn't look real. If my wife had to pull a gun I would want it to look real and hope like heck the guy would run for his life rather than think it is just a squirt gun

I guess why im leaning towards the revolver is that if a serious situation came about, would not want the chance of jamming, however slim that chance may be. Then again, if someone grabs onto a revolver, it wont shoot anyways if it cant spin.

Let her pick one that feels good to her. I would stay with a wheel gun that is double action only. With all you have to think about before you pull your firearm the last thing I want my wife think about is clearing a jammed auto, if a wheel gun does not fire just touch and press again

I would take her down to the sporting goods store with you.  Let her pick the gun she want to carry with her.  It would be like us guys going to pick out her bra we might buy something that is not practical.   Remember that women are  not as strong as us men.  When shooting a semi auto women tend to limp wrist when shooting.  This can lead to the slide not going back into lock up for the second shot.

Yeah but it will shoot once.  You grab onto a semi it wont shoot at all.

My opinion is that if its "your" idea to get her a carry pistol, she's probably better off with pepper spray or a stun gun for her purse.  Maybe get her a gun, but let her decide when she's comfortable enough with it for it to be second nature if that time ever comes.

And a pump shotgun is still the best home defense weapon.

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

Chances are, when a gun is pulled, it is in the dark and unseen so whether it is pink or blue isn't going to be much of a factor.

Before buying a handgun for protection it seems to me that one needs to give great consideration as to when and how to use it....especially when.  Taking a CC course teaches you a little bit about the  law but it doesn't give you even a hint about what happens when you use it for self defense.  I have never had to do it and pray I don't because from all the thinking and reading of others experience, it is pretty clear that if you pull the gun, you had better use it and when you do, you better be ready to be treated like a criminal.  We can talk smart but life will drastically change once it is done.  Pull and hope you scar someone so they run away is going to prove disasterous about 90 % of the time for the one that pulls it in defense and then chickens out.  I'm not saying don't have one, I am saying once you get one, prepare for the consequences if you use it or you don't.

The arrogance of the present is to forget the wisdom of the past.

In my opinion, unless you are quite proficient with a semi-auto, you should carry a revolver.

Man or woman.

There are plenty of nice, small framed options out there. ONe of my favorites it the S&W PD351.  22 mag and you get 8 shots.  With some of the personal protection ammo avaliable for the 22 mag now days, they have just as much or more energy than a 380.

Nice thing about a revolver to, is that you can carry it with one out under the hammer and as soon as you pull the trigger she's barking. For those who are not 100% confident carrying a fully loaded auto it makes a great option.
