BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's House Republican majority leader is introducing legislation that would require the University of North Dakota to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname.

Fargo Rep. Al Carlson's bill says UND and the Board of Higher Education have to stop plans to drop the nickname. It says if the NCAA penalizes UND for refusing to drop the nickname, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem has to consider filing an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA.

Carlson said he is introducing the bill Monday. Mandan Rep. RaeAnn Kelsch and Tioga Rep. Bob Skarphol have signed on as co-sponsors. No hearing date has been set.

Carlson said he didn't consult UND President Robert Kelley or the Board of Higher Education before he drafted the bill. He predicts it will be popular with legislators and the public.

I like the intent of this however I feel it may be too little too late….I do not like the fact they did not go to UND for approval first I think that may hamper the bills success….I would like to see an anti-trust lawsuit against the NCAA for being a bunch of jackwads in this whole process…

I do not think it is too late. Not much has been done in the transition process. One of the sad things is that Preserving traditions committee has decided to remove all items, pictures, memrobilia that has any Sioux content. So much for preserving the history......it seems they just want to wipe all the history away.

Its a big issue for many ND residents and should be resolved in a FAIR manner. There is no way the liberal administration at UND would support this bill.

I'm glad somebody in the legislature decided to step in.  Someone is politics actually listening to his constituents?  Wow, imagine that.  I'm not ready to see the Fighting Sioux name go away.  Stand up to the sh!theads at the NCAA that have no clue about the history of the name and the tribes relationship to the school.

I love it.  This is exactly the type of thing that should be done.  This is what the majority of the people want so I'm glad Carlson took the desires and is telling the NCAA to stick it.  It's about time somebody stood up to the NCAA.

i'm not in this fight - could care less if they kept the name/changed the name. (go gophers!)
but do you think the taxpayers of ND would want to spend resources on this issue - resources that are spoken for our roads, schools, healthcare and other real state obligations?

I kinda had a feeling of "Your gunna do what?!" when I read this. I really dont have an opinion either way on this one anymore if I did it would just be get this over with already. A few questions that popped into my mind are Do you this it's wise for the House and other nonmembers of the NCAA to be going after the NCAA in the name of a University without consenting the school first? I realise that Universities do get state funding and support but if there are any repercussions they will be felt by the school and not the legislators behind the bill. I do kinda like the spirit though, I can see someone sitting there saying "well if they are gunna pull that crap then f-'em we're gunna do this!" Although I wonder how many reps, if any, heard or read this and said "Are we really going to talk about this right now?" But it is what it is I guess. Like I said I like the spirit and the inititive whether its wise or not it will definitely be fun to watch. Also I cant help but see some parallels with the overall attitude associated with this bill that relate to earlier ND politics. ND has has a few polititians in the past that did a few things that basically told the big guy where he can stick it and more power to it in my mind, for instance Bill Langer was one of them. I had an professor once that said a popular saying of the time was "Bill Langer is a son of a b#$^h, but he's our son of a b...." Maybe we'll be needing to change the name someday. On another note for those of us from the western side of the state where it's almost imperative that to get elected one needs a pic in the paper wearing a cowboy hat do you think maybe they're are more NDSU fans voting on the bill?

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

That guy is a classic! I think his classes we the only ones I felt weren't a waste of time there. I wonder if he still grabs a room like he used to. Of all the history and poli sci profs I had in two schools I think he was the sharpest and most interesting. I was wondering if someone would call me on that.

Stenberg is a good guy. He really enjoys what he does, cant say the same for all professors. I was a Fort Union two summers ago and he was out there. 87 degrees and he was in full era uniform! It always seemed like he was looking right over you and not paying attention to you, than all of a sudden...BOOM...scared sh*tless!

Go for keeping the name, political correctness needs to be stopped even in something small like this.
Yeah, it's kind of like that.

I'm not in this fight either, but it seems to me that its pointless to waste legislative time on this, not even to mention all the taxpayers money in the drawn out  legal repercussions that would follow it.
Eyexer, you said the majority of people in ND were for this?  How did you figure this out?  References?  An unbiased poll?
Personally I think the majority of people in ND just want it over and settled, a new name picked and have it all behind!    At least the vast majority of my LIBERAL friends, and my CONSERVATIVE friends!   Thinking about it, all of em wish it were over, not just the vast majority!    My $.02 anyway.

Carlson should've had the governor call a special session to debate this a year ago.  It's beyond the deadline and constitutionally there's nothing a bill could do to change this up.  Onpoint may not be in this fight, but I am!

I'll be wearing my new t-shirt to the hockey game this weekend, the final white-out clothing available between the Gopher/Sioux battles.   I'll also let everyone on the fan bus headed to the Ralph that OnPoint is aboard our bus!  lol     Every gopher deserves a crosshair, don't they?

It's gonna be a sweep on Saturday!!
