has anybody seen the show lately? the long range tip guy has been doing demonstrations with an interesting rifle lately.

it is a bolt gun. it has a pistol grip and looks looks like an AR receiver, has a skeleton like butt stock, it has a box magazine, fore end like an AR and he has a suppressor on it.

does anybody know what it is?

That whole premise of pulling off 1,000 yard shots on game (as seen on Best of the West) bothers me.  I haven't watched it a lot, but can't recall seeing any missed shots, wounded game - - oftentimes it's a spine shot animal dropping in its tracks.  I wonder what their "edited out" collection looks like?

I'm all for shooting at any distance you care to on a target range or in a prairie dog town.  In fact, that's where I've learned that judging wind "between here & there" to get THE FIRST shot on target is NOT an exact science (gravity more or less is - - taking incline/decline out of the equation).

It's troubling to me to see this promoted as "You too can do this if you just buy our scope...and other equipment."

Yes, the shots they show are phenomonal and they have the right to promote their product, but it puts a burr under my saddle to see them promoting this as a viable way to hunt big game.  They, no doubt, cripple game - - and I'm sure that the inexperienced customers of theirs that buy into this method will too.

Armalite AR 30?  Haven't seen the show, so just guessing?

Does anyone have any experience with these as to how they shoot?

Actually I believe most of their shots are high shoulder shots. They like to do the bang flop. Kind of makes it look better onscreen than an animal running 100 yds after being shot at 800 yds.

Could be....  My point being, if the wind is blowing 10-15 mph at the site of the shot, 20 down the canyon between you and switches directions 30 -40 degress on the next slope and is blowing at 5 to 10 mph.  At those kinds of ranges, it doesn't take a whole lot of error to push that bullet from a vital shot to a gut shot.  How do you put THAT much faith into your first shot on a big game animal?

I think the biggest part of shooting enough to know you can make that shot is also knowing when you can't.

This moment is a paradox, it's the oldest you've ever been as well as the youngest you'll ever be.

Always remember, if you can see it, you can shoot it.

I have to admit with the wind in NoDak there are a lot more days where you can't ethically shoot at big game a long distance than when you can. It is incredible what even a 20 mph wind does to a bullet.

In the field it's pretty tough to know the difference between 15 and 20 or 20 and 25.  If I don't "know" the wind, I'm probably not shooting past 300yds or so.
